  • Replacement for apple?

    Hey y'all,

I have a recipe for a turkey patty you bake in the oven. It has turkey meat (ground), onion, celery, and 1/4 c. apple. There are seasonings too, but the apple is the problem. It does add flavor, but I think it is mostly there for moisture. Is there an induction friendly veggie I can use to replace the apple?

I like chayote squash, it' has the consistency of an apple, though is not sweet like an apple. it's quite juicy though..and would help with the moisture part of it..and would probably go nice with the turkey.

Chayote would be good, but it's not on the Induction foods list. The closest things on the Induction list would be jicama and kohlrabi (though it has a mild radish/cabbage flavor).

that would work 2Big. In fact, it would taste yummy---like Thanksgiving dinner in a patty.

Wow i'm surprised actually, I thought it was an induction veggie (though it's been ages since i've read the list), that's interesting...out of curiousity what is it considered? a starchy veggie?

You know something I don't know what to classify it. It's definitely a "vegetable fruit" and it's in the cucumber/melon family. So i guess you can add it during Rung 1 or you can add it during Rung 4.

You know I think that Chayote would be on induction list if it weren't a fruit that few folks use or know about. It has 5.94 carbs and 2.24 of that is fiber so it is less than jicama.

Whew!! I've been eating it ever since I heard about it, and I was sure it was acceptable but I don't know where I got that info from. I think it's in Atkins for Life. Anyway, I love it. I make fried apples out of it and it's good in stews and eaten raw with my lunch. It's a very versatile and lovely freggie. lol

LIR, when I hit the Rung 1 of OWL, I added low carb veggies, particularly the Asian veggies, that weren't on the Induction list. I felt more comfortable experimenting with those non-list low carb veggies there than I would have during Induction.

If you cook it in some atkins morning start apple drink till it cooks down a bit and add some cinamon after it really tastes like apples. I read that tip on another site somewhere...it really does work.

I used some SF apple cider once with chayote. yummy! Bit higher on the carbs, but lower then the apple sauce it called for. Spooned into I think it was acorn squash, was delish! I know somewhere I saw a recipe for Jicama and SF cider for fried apples.
