  • Modified OWL...how do you do it??

Do you add in the items like you would on regular OWL just keeping it under 20-30 grams but still following the "ladder"?

Ok guys I"m really nervous....I know I can't go on vacation on induction..I just wouldn't be smart...so I need to move on.. BUT following the regular OWL I'm wondering if I'll have enough "variety" to get through 10 days on vacation and not making my own food vs doing a modified where I'd have more options but REALLY have to watch what I eat...

    YIKES I have 4 weeks..HELP

modified OWL is the catch phrase for all methods of eating OWL foods without climbing to your CCLL as you climb the carb ladder.

Some folk add all the rungs back climbing the ladder but swapping out already climbed rung foods for the new higher foods as they go along testing the effects of the food groups. Others set their carb cut off number at some number they have decided they are willing to climb up to while other stay with the induction 20 net carb limits.

SOme add only a few of the lower rungs back.

Read the OWL stickies up above about how to do OWL and you should be fine

    Happy OWLing.

During Modified OWL, 20 net carbs is your upper carb limit. If you begin creep up to 25 or 30, you're doing a full-blown OWL.

Basically you go up the carb ladder, adding 5 net carbs but not going over 20 net carbs daily, while following the OWL rules. The first rung of the ladder is veggies (Induction lists veggies). So you add an additional 5 net carbs of these.

Most folks in Induction eat between 10-15 net carbs daily. So, see what your average Induction nets are, then add an additional 5 nets of the veggies.

Be sure to keep a food diary and the Blood Sugar Symptom Test in Chapter 12 comes in handy too.

Ok...so what do you think.... would I be better off trying the modified OWL or to do regular OWL and just stay in each rung for a week (I have 4 weeks until our trip)..that should get me to the berry rung...I don't drink so thats not an issue I'll skip that rung to get to the Legumes and possibly other fruits while on vacation...is that heading up the ladder too fast??

Berries are pretty low in carbs---especially raspberries. Legumes are pretty high in carb and a 1/4 cup is roughly 5-7 net carbs, except soybeans which are about 1 net carb.

I think if you are shooting for legumes, you should do a real OWL, find your CCLL, and eat happily during vacation.

What I did was to stay in the Rung 1 and find my CCLL. That made the transition to the other rungs alittle bit easier because I already knew how many carbs I could eat.

not2late...thats a good idea..finding out how many carbs I can handle on rung 1 - how long did it take you to do that? Is 4 weeks long enough in your opinion?

It depends on how your body reacts to the carbs your adding on.

You can try adding an additional 5. Follow the OWL rules and see what happens. If you want to add another 5 go ahead. If vacation creeps up on you before you find your CCLL, stay on that level during vacation.
