  • Totally Stalled

Hey guys, I have been on and off for about 3 years.... I lost 35 pounds in 2003 and now I am back on..

I am in my 3rd week of induction and totally stalled. I lost a little over 8 pounds
the first two weeks and now nothing...its very frustrating... I am eating well
roughly 900- 1200 calories a day (I try mixing it up to keep my metabolism guessing).

    sample meal:
    B'fast - hard boiled egg
    Lunch - Tuna/Mayo no bread
Snack - 1 cup of sliced cucumbers
    Dinner - 2 cups of salad w/meat

Everyone says they see a difference, I have not measured myself but the scale is not moving...depressed...

    I work out 5 days a week...

ps what is a whooshie pie and does it work?

    Re: Totally Stalled

A stall is defined as one month of no changes in weight or measurements. You aren't in a stall. You are in a natural pause in the weight loss that typically happens in week three.. Give this a read:
    http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5090

It's entirely possible to have the scale not move, but your body change. Put the scale away and only hop on it once a week. With your working out, you may be building muscle and that's replacing the fat, so your fat percentage may very well be decreasing but the scale is staying the same. Things are happening! Measure yourself today so that you have something to compare it to. Start taking a monthly picture for that same reason.

A note about your menu...try spreading the veggies through your day a bit more. Smash that boiled egg up with a bit of mayo and eat it with a celery stick. I like to chop up some broccoli or cauliflower or celery into my tuna salad.
Here's my cut and paste of Whooshie Pie:
    Whooshie Pie

'Whooshie Pie' (not it's original name) originated last year when a member made it, ate it, and experienced a weight loss. Whether it was a real phenomenon due to the thermogenic nature of horseradish, or whether it was a fluke, the member had a lot of fun with it..renamed it Whooshie Pie, :joy and the whole concept was born.

This is not a documented miracle food...and if you don't like horseradish or mustard, it'll probably turn your stomach...lol...but if you do, enjoy it! You might have a whooshie, you might not....but at least you'll have had a good Induction Friendly meal.
You can find it on the third page of the Beef recipes up there in the Recipes tab..here's a link:

      Re: Totally Stalled

I've said this before ^^ This is how my weight loss works.

Phase 1. The scale drops down a couple of numbers
Phase 2. The scale parks on a number and then the clothe sizes decrease

And then it repeats. You might not be losing actual units of lbs., but you're losing inches - isnt' that even better? Who cares if you weigh 150 lbs. if you look like you're in the best shape you can be? I'd much rather be 150 without flab than 130 with flab :P
I will lose weight, I will lose weight, I WILL LOSE WEIGHT!

Hi Drosa, it's nice to meet you. I take a slightly different view on some things and this is one of them. If your not losing weight its time to adjust.

First let me say I dont believe the 3 weeks stall thing. I think people can start the diet, be eating something wrong from the get go but still lose there water weight. Then after the first 2 weeks of water weight loss notice that there not losing any more. I think the problem is more likely that something might have been incorrect from the start.

Second use a tape measure and check your body fat percentage for the better judge of what has been lost.

Last something must be wrong with the sample meal provided. It just doesnt look like your eating enough and should be in starvation mode. I can't even picture that adding up to the 900-1200 calories that you mention.

Well I might have skimped on my meal

            Generally

            2 hard boiled eggs
2 servings of chicken or tuna salad (mayo)
            Cucumbers for snack
            Dinner is steak(Meat over salad)

according to fit day I am right at the mark unless I am totally srewing up my potions and way below target..

            Thanks for all the replies..

I agree with Tommy, you need to eat more!! This isn't a 'diet' where you have to eat tiny portions of food! I didn't lose anything for two weeks after Induction, so give it some time. Oh, and if you are hungry please eat!!
What would we do without it?

                Re: Totally Stalled

I just re-read your original post and see that you do exercise 5 days a week. It is very possible that while you may have lost fat you increase the same in muscle which is a good thing.

Try www.mybodycomp.com to track your measurements and body fat and it should show more detail of fat & inches lost.

Also I still think you may not be eating enough. That barely looks around 1,000 calories to me. Find out what your minimum calorie intake is and watch it.

Also re-evaluate what you are eating, is it perhaps a condiment that your not mentioning or something that you may be drinking etc...

Keep logging your food and try the bodycomp thing and if your still havent seen any progress in a week after logging everything, post again or contact me directly.

                    Re: Totally Stalled

Your minimum calorie intake is the minimum calories your body needs per day even if you were to do nothing all day. This is the minimum amount your body needs to nourish itself. I've seen it called by different names and with Atkins it's referred to as BMR or Basal Metobolic Rate.

Additional calories are burned per day according to what exercise or activies you perform (Refer to AMR) but when you eat below your BMR your body will enter "starvation mode"

So optimally for weight loss you should calculate what your body burns per day as a minimum and with activities. For weight loss your goal calories to eat per day should fall in between you min and max calories burned per day.

There are many calculators on the web to formulate your calories burned per day. If you try that report at www.mybodycomp.com it will also tell you this.

                      Re: Totally Stalled

I noticed you mention cucumbers as a snack - are you eating them on their own or with some fat - cream cheese. fullfat dressing, pate etc?

Dont eat carbs on their own but always with some fat/protein to help iron out any bloodsugar spikes. So a snack should contain some fat, some protein and some carbs to give your body the optimum fuel throughout the day.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Yeah, I too have the sticky scale! It's just STUCK! But ... I can see the changes in my body and clothes fit a lot better. So ... do NOT quit no matter how frustrated you do. EVERY day, I have the split-second thought that "it's not working, I'm gonna just eat" and ... then I remind myself that if I don't stick this out ... I will blow the 8 pounds I lost and I'll gain 18 back!!! So .... yeah, stick to how clothes fit and put the scale away for 2 weeks. You'll lose!!
THIS TIME and for the LAST TIME, I will do this!!

                              Re: Totally Stalled

One week with no weight loss is nothing to worry about; ideally, it's nothing really to even notice all that much. Like others have said, scale loss often comes off in sudden chunks and isn't the best indicator of success. Women especially often have hormonal water bloating/retention going on even at off-times in the month, and let me tell you, is water ever heavy!

Honestly, especially if you're exercising, you might want to put the scale away and only use the tape for a few weeks until you've got a reasonable length of time on which to base your concerns about stalling.

FYI, I had a week of no weight loss just when you did in your diet, and I'm exercising 6 days a week. I've gone on to lose pounds and clothing sizes (sizes seemingly faster than pounds) just fine.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

                              Vigilance, not perfection.
