Okay all you skeptics who think you can't vacation in style and stay TRUE to Atkins, listen up.
DH and I just returned from 5 glorious days in the caribbean on Carnival Inspiration. For those of you who are familiar with cruising, you know that the FOOD is everywhere .. you eat eat eat and then eat some more. The thought of taking a free-for-all-food-extravaganza vacation while doing lowcarb would be impossible for many folk. Not for me .. and I don't mean that to sound boastful. THE FACT IS: YOU CAN STAY TRUE TO ATKINS ANYWHERE, EVEN ON A CRUISE SHIP WITH AN ENDLESS SUPPLY OF FOODS.
For me, the strategy was simple. Aim for high protein, high fat, non-starch and put my blinders firmly in place for anything else. Oh believe me, had I wanted to indulge in crap foods, there was plenty to be had: from the 24 hour pizzeria and soft-serve ice cream bar, to the fresh baked croissants, cinnamon rolls, breads, potatoes, chips, fries, burgers with buns, etc. It was all there, but I passed right on by all of it, and headed for the luxurious foods that Atkins allows me to eat and SAVOR: you know the ones ... LOBSTER, FILET MIGNON, Field of Greens salad bar, steamed veggies, seafoods with bernaise sauce, Eggs benedict (bring on the Hollandaise!!!) ...
I tell ya, I never ate so good in my life ... and running 2, 3 or 4 miles a day on the jogging track was just icing on the low-carb cake for me!!
I endulged in a few (too many) margaritas when we hit Mexico, but no problem ... I made darn sure I burned off all that in the gym!!
Bottom line: a very very fun vacation, and not a pound gained on the scale.
YES, IT CAN BE DONE!
