  • The Morning After

Here it is...7:53am on a Saturday morning. I've already bathed and dressed. I've also been up all night battling an upset stomach, a mild bout of diahrea, nausea and lightheadedness.

Yesterday, I made the choice to go off-plan. I debated posted about it here because I didn't want to hear/read the "I told you so's," but decided that #1: I made that CHOICE, so I can't really whine about the repercussions. #2: Perhaps someone else is considering doing the same, and I can spare them what I am going through this morning

Oddly enough, I don't really feel "guilty" per se. Don't ask me why. I feel like , but "guilty" is not the emotion I'm feeling. I've been having a very, very difficult time with this WOE for about the past week, I think for a number of reasons that have absolutely NOTHING to do with Atkins.

I'm on medication that has me pretty messed up physically and emotionally. I'm working on a grant to save my job which is due in a few days, and me and my boss have been butting heads A LOT this week (I'm sure because of the stress). And finally TOM. It's been rough.

Yesteday, I just got to the point where I said, " it."

For those of you considering doing what I did, let me just tell you (it's so cliche'), "It's not worth it." I am sick as a dog this morning. I've NEVER had even an ALCOHOL hangover that has felt like this.

    Yesterday's breakfast
    1 sauceless smoked rib
    Smoked chicken leg quarter
2"x2" square vegan zucchini bread (cheat #1)

    Lunch
    Smoked sausage and sauerkraut
1/2 SLIVER of cake (cheat #2) from the cake lady at work...yes, she came BACK to the dept after being gone only a week WITH cake in tow for a friend's birthday). Immediately after eating my 1/2 a sliver of cake, I felt lightheaded. That should have been my first clue...but no...it got worse...

    Dinner
    TGI Fridays
Spinach-Artichoke Dip with chips (The dip isn't so bad...the chips are TERRIBLE...a definite NO-NO). We requested the veggie sticks with them, as well as the chips, but TGIF failed to put the veggies in our carryout container, and when I got home, I just ate the dip w/some chips)

Pecan-crusted chicken salad w/mandarin oranges, cranberrys, blue cheese and balsamic vinaigrette (I thought I was being sort of "good" by eating "good carbs").

    "Atkins-friendly cheesecake" for dessert

That is what I ate yesterday. Now, I told myself I could have ANYTHING I wanted and this is what I chose. Look at my menu very closely. Yes, I went off-plan, but I clearly didn't go as hog wild as I could have. I stayed away from heavy pastas and regular desserts. I limited myself to a SMALL...very, very SMALL piece of cake, and I am miserable today for it.

The most shocking and telling thing about this whole experience to me is how much difficulty my body is having dealing with those carbs. There is no doubt in my mind that the two WORSE things I had were the cake and the tortilla chips. Not that any of it was "good," but after only a month, my body was obviously clean.

Now, I'm a mess. I'm restarting induction as of today. If you're thinking about it, don't do it. I can't believe that food can make you feel like this. Anything that makes you feel THIS bad can't be good for you. Have you ever heard of anybody having a "veggie" hangover???

Talk about the school of hardknocks. Don't get me wrong. I did it, and I have to pay the price, but I'm really, really surprised at how negatively my body handled those foods.

    Re: The Morning After

I fell/jumped off for several months last summer (and wiped out a lot of hard work in the process!), and one of the things I noticed is that my body can no longer handle foods that it previously had no problem with. I was plagued with bloating, gas and diarrhea. I tried gas-x and other gas remedies. Nope. I tried beano. Nope. I tried Pepto Bismol. Nope. Wait...now HERE is a novel idea.....I went back on plan and my gut quieted down immediately. Who'da thunk it??

...sigh...I'm glad that you're hopping back on plan, and that your one night stand (er..one DAY stand) is just that. You may be sadder...but you're also wiser!!

ps....sorry to hear that life is such a pain right now...double hugs

wayless, these things happen, this is life.

They may happen in the future. One little bit of cake here and there, it's what you do the 'morning after' that counts.

As Dr. Atkins says: get straight back on induction.

I've just nearly finished two weeks of induction Boot Camp, boy was that tough! But I learnt a lot.

Keep strong! And I'm glad you came back!!

Glad you are back on track. remember stick to induction only long enough to get your ketosis going and then move back where you were before the cheat so you can get your House of Atkins built strong.

            Re: The Morning After

I had a bad day yesterday too. My daughter had a 9th birthday party and I fell for the pizza and cupcakes. I feel awful today! I was up 2 pounds on the scale, but it feels like 50. I will be stronger now. That definately wasn't worth it!

I am taking my kids to a semi-pro hockey game today. To prepare I am going to go get some sausage and I am going to fry it with alot of onions and green peppers. If I get nice and full I will be able to stand strong around the concession foods.

I cheated a week ago and let me tell you, I was sooooo sick the next day! I just chalked it up as a learning experience and started over the next day. Thank goodness I didn't gain any weight back. I'll just remember the next time I want to cheat, I'll remember how bad I felt.

                Re: The Morning After

Last Friday I felt too tired to go to the gym, woke up tires, felt yukky ALL DAY! That hasn't happened before since I've been on ATkins. Then I worked it out. We had guests and went out 3 times last week, and ach time, I had a (very small) serve of white bread. I paid for it with a day or so of feeling absolutely ERK! Won't be doing that again, let me tell you.
