I know of some of you don't read japanese so I took some pictures of products available here, in hopes that you can find them.

ok those above are flavored "sugars" they are made with aspertame so be warned.
the white with the big 0 is regular "sugar" flavor
the pink next to is "mocha"
the yellow on top is "carmel"
    and the green is "hazelnut"
    these are really yummy

this is "brown sugar" but this one is made with sugar alcohols.

this is the fiber supplement I take (it is mixed with water and drank)

    this is protein powder

All of these above items can be found at Matsumoto Kiyoshi which is a nationwide drug store.

Ok, this next link is a PDF it will download an order form. This is for a health food store, they deliver anywhere in Japan and they deal in English, order form, emails everything. Lots of stuff here like, flax seeds, soy flour and natural nutbutters.

By the way, I read Japanese and have lived here 9 years. So if you have any questions about products please ask and I will try to look it up for you.

Ajinomoto also makes a new PARUSUI-TO which is ok. I don't got my camera with me now but it's ok, I can't use it because I am on induction and I am scared it will blow my groove.

I find it very difficult to get foods in Japan that don't have tons of carbs.

Hi Pammie. I've been looking for Japanese low carb stuff at Japanese grocery stores here in Los Angeles for months, too! So far, my solution is to start from the scratch as much as I can. No more Mabo Tofu no Moto for me.

I found this recipe of Kanten Udon which sounds kinda yuckie at first but it made me think I might give it a try. Kanten actually becomes jelly stage at pretty high temp compared to gellatin. It can tolerate something like 60-70 C. So, if you make "noodles" with Tokoro Ten pusher thing, and pour some warm soup, you can make a noodle soup! Problem is that it's a bit hard to find tokoro ten maker thing in the winter and packaged tokoro ten is packed in vinegar. Oh well....

Anyway, the above site has lots of kanten recipes although they use their own products in their recipes. Kanten is very high in fiber (packages I see here in LA says same grams of carb and fiber). Oh, and the site is in Japanese only.

hi, a few up dates here.

if you are using ttengu natural foods (which if you are doing atkins in japan, I assume you are) please email them and tell them you want low carb foods!! I did, and the reply I got was they were considering it because they had some requests....the more they get the more they are going to "consider"

also, recently I am seeing dite lemon coke, diet coke and diet sprite around, they are all made with splenda!! the diet pepsi however is till made with aspertame.

Yamaya, which is a discount liquor store (chain store through out Japan) also carries some foreign foods. They have some good cheese, and right now it is on sale 3 for 1000 yen. Also, they have 1 serving size snack packs of beef jerky which is great to carry around with you in case of emergencies!

          ok, not a product...

but for those of you who can read japanese, I found a data base with nutritional values for some japanese foods....it still does not have everything (I have been looking for the carb values in goya!!) but it has a lot, so give it a try if you can't find it listed elsewhere.

you must enter your food in all hiragana....and different types of the food will come up, like fitday...so if you cannot read japanese it will be difficult..

Pammie more info on those okra chips please.
are they dehydrated okra and bitter melon? or are they like pringles and made from a mash of the okra and bittermelon then shaped and cooked?

they are dehydrated, seeds and everything still in there for the okra, big seeds are out of the bitter melon but the pulp is still there.

I am thinking of getting a dehydrator and doing them myself, maybe try the same thing with green beans too... :nod

Im going shopping on Saturday. Hoping to find some noodles also. The bitter melon seem to be particularly interesting. I'm not a fan of okra so I might just bypass them.

one more question about that okra is it the woody kind or the soft kind? Sounds like just what I need to take care of my bumper crop of okra still producing in the gargen.

                          Tully's Coffee

I had a very nice suprise at tully's coffee yesterday.
they accidently put whipped cream in my coffee, so I went up and talked to the manager and asked if there was any sugar in it. he assured me there was not. I than told him very clearly that I am diabetic and if there is sugar I will get very sick, he was confident said they used only fresh cream and nothing more...the whipped cream didn't taste at all sweetened and today i am still in ketosis.

so, those of you who want to enjoy a little treat now and than. tully's whipped cream in the coffee is ok!

now, I just have to find out about starbucks! By the way, everytime I go to starbucks I ask if the have decaf, and of course never!! but I think if I keep asking often enough they will eventually bring it in....so to other coffee freaks in Japan. please ask for caffience less at starbucks! lets keep bugging them until they bring it in!

Thanks so much for posting this Pammie. I found the sugars the first time out. I go to Starbucks every time I go to Hiroshima and always ask for decaf, maybe we will wear them down.
I found whipping cream in the supermarket and I really like it, although its expensive! My question is does it contain the stablelizers like the US cream does.
