  • OWL, how I love you

You know, I was really scared to move on from induction to OWL, but now I can't imagine what I'd do without it. For me, induction was the Training Wheels of learning to eat a more balanced way, and OWL has forced me to pay attention to the larger picture of my health. I knew, even in induction, that my life with fruit and whole grains was not over, but Atkins has helped me learn what a *reasonable* portion of a carbohydrate is, and what's a healthy carb at that.

I was thinking about that this morning as I ate a boiled egg on a slice of whole grain toast, with fresh tomato slices and a few pieces of turkey bacon. I love knowing what my CCLL is and that eating toast or a half cup of brown rice for breakfast won't keep me from losing (actually I lose faster now than I did on extended induction!) and I love knowing that tonight for dessert I'll have fresh blueberries and cream.

I was trying to explain this to someone in my office yesterday, and all I could manage to say what that this WOE seems so *clean* to me. I eat fresh foods, whole foods, and in reasonable amounts without feeling deprived or grouchy, and even if there are times when my body needs to lose weight more slowly you could not PRY me from this WOE for love nor money. My co-worker sat down to a lunch of iceberg lettuce with no-fat Ranch and a bag of pretzels, and I sat down right next to her with my homemade chili chicken with chopped salsa, and you know what? I've lost 3 times more weight than she has this spring. You'd think that would make her think twice about what she's doing.

Just my boring post for the day. Thanks for being a wonderfully supportive place to visit.

Ten. Though I eat from that more rarely than I do the others, I still like knowing I can.

This is a good thread! We really really need posts like this in the Extended Induction forum because I am one of those multitudes who was so scared of moving from Induction into OWL that I went kicking and screaming into it and discovered... it wasn't as bad as I thought! It doesn't mean I don't find it difficult, but I have noticed so many EI posters who don't want to move onto OWL because they think they would stop losing altogether - such a misconception!
I have to admit that I am still struggling with OWL and would love to be in your shoes Reveal, but that's part of the parcel of OWL - not only does your body need to adjust to different way of eating, so does your head!

I know I was scared to move on to OWL, but I did it and I am loving it! I love trying new foods! And to top it off, I lost 3 lbs. last week (my first week on OWL). I'm starting the dairy rung today. Love it!

I couldn't agree more. I have never ate so healthy in my entire life.
I did induction for 3 weeks then moved straight to OWL and lost an average of 2 pounds a week. I couldn't have done it without having a variety of foods to choose from.

That is SO true! And you know, it does take time, but that learning process was the real value for me. The weight loss has actually become second to the way I am learning to listen to my body and figure out what works for me. I spent so many years filling up on foods that contributed to making me feel weary and sick and frustrated, and it took me a few months into this WOE to realize that my feeling better had everything to do with what I was feeding myself.

You know, there is so little in this world we can control. We can't control grief, or relationships, or illness, or the scariness of the world, but I do know that what I put into my own mouth today is something that I have the final say in and it's my responsibility to treat myself the way I would want someone else to treat me: with kindness. This is how I do it.

Hang in there, you'll get the hang of OWL. It's a great process, just be willing to let your body acclimate and know that you're doing something great for yourself.
