In order to lose weight a person needs to create a calorie deficit. A calorie deficit simply means you burn more calories per day then you consume. There are 2 ways of creating this deficit.
1) Decrease your calorie intake by eating less
2) Increase your calories burned by doing more exercise
When someone lowers there calories enough to lose weight there metabolism will eventually slow down and burn fewer calories. They also risk losing large percentages of muscle along with fat.
Exercising allows you to burn more calories per day, increase your lean body mass, speed up your metabolism, and optimizes losing fat instead of muscle.
Optimally a combination of diet and exercise will work the best. But priority should be placed on burning the calories rather then starving the calories for weight loss.
