                        Happy Anniversary, Megs

What did you find the most difficult about starting the Atkins WOE?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                            Questions! Questions ! Questions!!!!!! AAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

                            1. Strangest food

Ever: A Filipino stew called "dinuguan". I grew up in a diverse neighborhood and had neighbors from different parts of the world or who had lived in different parts of the world. I was friends or classmates with their kids so I would be invited over for lunch or dinner many times. Anyhow, dinuguan is a stew made from pork and pork blood---sort of like a stew version of "black pudding" Rich. It was very good, imo.

                            2. How did I get started on this WOE? What did I find the most difficult?

I work in a doctor's office and my immediate boss is a pediatrician. Back in 2000 she began noticing a greater number of overweight children coming to our office. In fact, some of these children were children who she had followed since birth. That concerned her because the parents were following the Food Pyramid etc. (She noticed the parents were getting chubbier too.)

So in 2003 she went to a 3 hour dinner conference. Two of the lectures were about high blood pressure in children and obesity in children. She dragged me along because her date (a non-pediatrician doctor) bailed on her at the last minute and she didn't want to drive into the city alone. This was still at the time when the laws weren't so strict and docs could bring medical and non-medical guests to pharmaceutical dinner conferences. Onto the obesity lecture...

They presented a study of overweight teenagers. Half the group they put on Atkins and half the group they put on the DASH diet. The Atkins group lost more weight and stuck with the diet better. That was interesting. Then the presenter made one other comment. He said if you were to eat 1 less serving of bread per meal, you would lose 1 pound after 5 days. That was even more interesting. I was a believer of the 9-11 servings of grains daily (because I spent some time as a vegetarian).

When I got home, I did net searches on Atkins and found alot of conflicting material. So I decided to order the book, read it and see for myself. It made sense to me--all of it. And I also realized that Atkins wasn't very different from the foods I was already eating---okay, I had to lose the pasta, rice and potatoes, but I was eating meat and the veggies on the list were ones that were already in my frig!

Saying good-bye to pasta, rice and potatoes was the most difficult thing for me to do! I'm a starchy carb junkie. Given a choice between another slice of cake or another helping of mashed potatoes, the potatoes would win hands down! So it was hard to give those things up. When I started OWL I decided I would never try to add potatoes back to my diet. But when I finally got to the starchy veg rung, I decided to give them a try. To tell you the truth, I couldn't see why I used to love them so much. They were okay, but they weren't as tasty as I had remembered them. Even with pasta and rice---I learned that it's what you put on or eat with the pasta and rice that tastes good because the pasta and rice are pretty bland.

I decided to give Dr. Atkins a try. He died the day I got my book from Amazon so I felt I owed it to him to do the diet by the book. Plus I know from my work, when a doctor tells you to do X, Y, Z, he's telling you for a specific reason. I did my 14 Days by the book and lost 9.5 pounds!

                            3. What I would change about Atkins?

Every place where Dr. Atkins wrote OWL slows down weight loss, I would qualify with what the "slow down" could be. I find those sentences to be the biggest hinderances to folks because they think "If I don't eat below 20 net carbs I'll never lose this weight. Even though I have a 200 pound weight loss goal and lost 20 pounds during Induction, which means I have low metabolic resistance to weight loss...."

I'll admit I stayed on Induction for about 4 months and moved off because I had to attend a work-related conference where I would hae a hard time finding Induction foods. But I made my decision to stay on Induction over the 14 days because I was on steriods for my asthma and allergies. These medications were ones that Dr. Atkins cited as potential weight-loss hinderances.

I would also put a section about TOM and Atkins/weight loss.

                            4. Favorite Exercise

Walking. I also to weight training and yoga. But walking remains my standby.

As much as I hate to admit it, the exercises we used to do in Phys Ed are effective too: push-ups, sit-ups, 'windmills', lunges, etc.

I also try to do as much physical labor as possible. So, in the winter, I shovel my own driveway and walkways and I mow my own lawn in the summer---saves my money and burns my fat.

                            5. Cooking....

Mom started us cooking when we were kids. Mostly we helped stir things. As we got older, we were allowed to do 1 meal a week. Plus, mom had a rule: if we wanted something extra, like cookies, we had to make it ourselves. So I learned that way.

I also loved watching cooking shows like Julia Child. After college and tremendous weight gain, I decided to get healthy by becoming a vegetarian. That forced me to read cookbooks. But I found that regular cookbooks had great "vegetarian' recipes, so I began reading a bunch of cookbooks and continued watching those cooking shows.

After more weight gain, I decided vegetarianism wasn't for me. So I became an omnivore and decided to "quality" cook---use best quality ingredients and avoid the processed stuff. (Another reason why Atkins appealled to me---Dr. Atkins was into whole foods and I didn't have to rely on pre-packaged stuff to do the diet!)

                            6. Modding...

Lemme tell ya! This has really improved my interpersonal skills.

                            7. Bad food combos for Megs...

Eggplant and tomato: makes me want to eat everything in sight
Cantaloupe: makes my stomach growl like I haven't eaten in weeks.
Ricotta cheese (except one brand): I don't lose weight.
Salted nuts: I don't lose weight. I don't think it's the sodium because I eat relatively low salt to begin with and when I did eat salted nuts I made sure I didn't eat anything salty during the day, like bacon. If I roast them myself, I'm fine.

                            Perfect meal:
                            A crab/shrimp-boil or a clambake.

                            8. Atkins Wild West

It's still an uphill battle. But it's not nearly as bad as it was a year or two ago.

                            9. Most liberating thing I've done....

I do more physically active things now. Before Atkins I used to avoid hiking and things like that because I just couldn't do it. But now....During the second year I was on Atkins I took a 5 mile hike through a national park: I was proud that I was able to do those 5 miles up and down hills. I would have gone farther but I was stopped by a snake in the middle of the trail. He was about 12 inches long, looked poisonous (head was triangular), and refused to be intimidated by me.

Last year, I did the tourist thing and spent the day in DC. I walked from the US Capitol to Arlington National Cemetery and back (I wanted to save the metro fare, plus I wanted to show me I could make a round trip!).

                            10. Pics

I hate getting my picture taken---always have. What few before pics I have I'm hidden behind other people, ditto for the my during pics.

                            11. My pantry.....

Egads! That's asking alot, lol. I have lots of stuff crammed into cupboards and shelves.

                            EDIT
