Hi all...Just wondering how Hydroxycut (or other fat burners) fit into the Atkins WOE. I know it is used to increase metabolism, but is there a problem combining that with the big amount of fat we are eating on Atkins? confused again...LOL

Seriously, if you follow Atkins properly there is absolutely no need for any other "help" from other sources. I lost 60+lbs by just following this plan.

            Re: Hydroxycut

We all want to lose weight fast, myself included. But I'm no longer willing to compromise my health doing it. Those days are are long gone, for good.
A bunch of these diet pill companies are being sued for false claims, and who knows how these pills react with other medications?
Didn't Anna Nicole have diet pills in her system, along with all the other stuff she was taking?
My advice is save your money, and treat your body gently. The weight will come off with Atkins, and we have a better chance of keeping it off permanently by losing it a little slower.

Technically, they don't. In spite of what the 'fat burner' pill people say, there are only 2 physiologic ways to increase your metabolism: eating and exercising. When you eat, you need to digest and process the food. Your body expends energy to do that. So your metabolic rate increases after your meals and stays up for 3-4 hours after eating. I don't think I need to explain why exercise increases your metabolic rate.

All weight loss diets are ketogenic, in that they break down body fat. When fat, or any food, is metabolized it breaksdown into particles used by the body for energy. Non-low carb diets depend on the reduction of calories to aid this body fat breakdown: the body is put under artificial starvation conditions (lowered calories) and begins to break down the stored energy reserves (body glycogen, body protein, body fat).

Atkins, however, does not work on this principle. Atkins lowers carbohydrate intake. When the body is deprived of carbohydrates it must get its energy from other sources in addition to whatever you are eating. So it is forced to use your body fat to supplement the energy it gets from the foods you eat.

Many "fat burner" pills contain caffeine or other cardiovascular stimulants. These chemicals increase your heart-rate. In other words, they make your heart beat faster and harder. Yes, this 'burns' calories, but it also places additional work stress on a muscle (the heart) that never stops working anyway.

If Hydroxycut or any other 'fat burner' or diet pills worked we wouldnt be here. There would be no fat people walking around. We would all be thin. The simple truth is that NONE of these gimic pills work. They have slick advertising that pray on the hopes of overweight people. We WANT them to work eventhough we know they do not. The only thing these pills will successfully do is make your wallet thinner and perhaps even harm your health.

                  Re: Hydroxycut

The problem is, its like any diet, those things. As soon as you go off them, the weight will return, because you are returning to a state you had previous before using them. Your heart won't be beating a mile a minute, and you body would use the now "extra" energy it has for all kinds of nefarious purposes...*pokes her belly* I wouldn't trust them or give them any money, if it was me. Thats just my opinion...

                    Re: Hydroxycut

THEY ARE VERY DANGEROUS!!!!! I ALMOST KILLED MYSELF TAKING THEM(stacker 2 ef). I had two different incedents.1) Aug 2005 took one pill ( had been taking them for a while at that point) while teaching at a summer camp got overheated and had to be on bedrest for a week.
                    2) Aug 2006, I obviously haden't learned from the incedent from the year before, at this point I had been taking them since May 2006.Due to the fact that I was not consuming alot of caffeine (thanks to low carbing) I thuoght that taking the one pill was harmless as long as I exercised when I felt the effects. Well on this day I took it and had to try to go register for school, so I thought " yeah , i'll just work out when I get home, no big deal". I live in Atlanta and it had to be 95+ outside. I got 20 mins down the hwy and started to panic,my heat felt as though it was going to come out of my chest!!! It was a big ordeal involving the D.O.T having to stop and assist me. Sadly, my health hasn't been the same. I've been to the doctor and been tested for everything under the sun(thyriod scans, blood pressure wnt to 160 went it had been 120 on atkins) and every test has come back fine, but it's a slow recovery and there are times when I feel awful still.
The whole point of this long naritive is just to say that if I had just done atkins the way that I had been I wouldn't have to deal with all of this and wishing I had never seen diet pills, they are junk. Most of all for low carb dieters for some reason they do us extra harm (maybe the pure life style we try to live). It's not worth your health

                      Re: Hydroxycut

I work with a guy who is an exercise guru who is in the gym every day. he told me Hydroxycut used to have ephedrine which would up your metabolism a small amount but it also killed some folks so that cut that out of the ingrediants. Now, it just has herbal & natural stimulants like ECGC, the extract from green tea which very slightly increases the metabolism in some people. For a fraction of the price of Hydroxycut, you can buy the One-A-Day Weight Loss vitamins which are regular vitamins with ECGC added in.
