We all know that diet sodas, especially those with aspertame are a no-no on Atkins, whether you're in induction or OWL or Maintenance. But here is another good reason to lay off the diet sodas and aspartame sweetners:
Have you ever gotten a canker sore in your mouth? You know, those little yellow spots on the inside of your cheeks or on the gums that have the little red halo around them? They hurt like, well you know and they seem to linger forever. Eating and drinking is tough, let alone if it's something hot or acidic. Well I have suffered from these canker sores (aphthous ulcers) or a while now and was freaking out thinking I was dying, that I was immunocompressed, had cancer, etc. It seems however, and this info I found in a recent studied cited on Wikipedia states that the most common cause of canker sores, other then stress and vitamin deficiencies, is an increase in the amount of diet soda (make with aspartame or saccharin) that we drink. Something in the make up of the ingredients can become very toxic to the lining of our mouths and therefore, lead to these painful ulcers. Now I don't know about you, but I have always been a regular Coke drinker until I decided a couple of months back to cut out Coke and switch to Diet. It was around this time that I began to experience these issues. One would heal and I would get another. And I mean, I was up to 2 or 3 diets as well as sweetened coffee or tea on top of that a day!
Just a little bit of FYI for those who love their diet sodas, but also suffer from these problems like I do.
