  • Prevent excessive Skin with big weight loss???

I need and want to lose a lot of weight (100 lbs) . I've read a lot about all of the amazing weight loss successes here and I am incredibly impressed.

With Atkins you we're basically melting away the fat, but what about the skin? I want to do whatever is necessary to prevent as less as possible excessive skin after the (hopefully successful) weight loss.

Do you guys have any tipps how to prevent loose and flappy skin?

The only things I suggest are exercise, drink your water, keep skin moisturized, try dry brushing your skin, and keep losing.

Skin is your largest organ and it is constantly adjusting. You will hear people on these boards who have made it to goal talk about how their skin is still shrinking.

At one time I had lost 65 pounds. (That 15 pounds is coming back off) My skin shrunk great everywhere exept my arms and my tummy. But keep in mind that I have been obese most of my adult life and have had 3 pregnancies. Someone who has only been overweight a couple of years might be able to lose weight and have no loose skin. It all depends on how elastic your skin is.

I've been dry-brushing for about 2 months now, and my skin is softer, firmer, and looks a whole heck of a lot better! I see you've got a link up there that explains how to do it. Here's another one with a bit more detail:

You can start head to toe, or toe to head, and really, you don't have to do exactly the number of strokes they advise. You can do more, you can do less. I often do a little extra brushing on trouble spots. The important thing to remember is that strokes either are circular, or they move towards the heart.

Oh, and dry-brushing FEELS really good too!

Also, be warned. When you do this the first time, you may move the lymph through your system in a way it hasn't for a while. The fluid will flow quickly through your heart and can give you a wild head rush. So be close to a seat or sitting somewhere so you don't fall over and hurt yourself. It doesn't happen often, usually when you kick it into gear for the first time in ages.

Dry brushing is really a good way to encourage that lymph movement and help you avoid problems like lympedema.

umm.. I also take an Omega-3 Oil. Like Flax Seed Oil... I think you can also use Cod Liver Oil for the same thing. I didn't think any of them worked, I drank a ton of water the entire time, but dry brushing and oil halfway through. My BF commented that you could see a huge difference in whatever I was doing about the skintoning after using them for a couple months.

Dry brushing? Hmmmm, I'm in nursing school and I'm an EMT, I've never heard of it. I will have to research a little and maybe try it...I'll try almost anything once!

When I worked as a CNA in a nursing home I don't recall doing this a treatment for patients, albeit it would have been good for them!

Julirama- what kind of results have you had doing the dry brushing? Will a big natural scrub brush work, the kind you use in the bath???

I'm not Julie, but I've had amazing results from dry brushing (even wet brushing when I started). I use one of the natural brushes (like you use in the bath) that's about as big as my hand or a little bigger. I do that and then wash and follow up with moisturizer and it makes a huge difference in skin tone *and* softness.
