  • OWL rules have a typo

I know many of us have been concerned about doing rung one because of the Rules of OWL box on page 170 of the DANDR paperback book saying eat the new food group only 3 times the first week and what are we suposed to us for the 5 net carbs the other 4 days junk food? so wee eat the new carb level every day per the page 170 insturctions

Well finally a live person talked about it with some higher ups and no email autoreply quoting page 170 arrived and they apologiezed and said

that should be a new food to you 3 times a week not the new food group 3 times a week.

So Eat the 5 new net carbs of the rung every day but if there is a food in that food group you haven't eaten like say jicama in rung 1 you only eat it 3 days of that first week you try it and another veggies the other days. so the berry rung could be say strawberries 3 days and blueberries 3 days and raspberries the other day or 7 different berries or however you wanted to do it just so each new food in each group is never eatten more then 3 times the first week you eat that food.

Thanks 2big...great information! It was confusing....this week I've been adding the extra carbs every other day...now I can start eating the same veggies all week

Next week I will be trying some "new" kinds of veggies so at least I know how to OWL properly.

Well this is confusing :confused .
I just started "more veggies" rung and I only eat things from induction list anyway. So I should eat more of them just every day?
If I start nuts, they are NEW food to me, right. So I eat those 3x a week. How do I up my net carbs for the other days :confused . This doesn't make any sense, but I'm stpid anyway...

you have nuts every day just different nuts so that you don't have any type of nut more then 3 times in the fist week you eat that type of nut. you could have almonds 3 days and macadamia nuts 3 days and walnuts one day or any combination of them that doesn't have you eating the same nut more then 3 times the first week you eat that type of nut.

Re: OWL rules have a typo

in my book I couldn't find the 3 times a week thing anywhere.. .. I have the hardcover 3rd edition and it says:
" Your Own Private, Personal Number (Page 147)
....I refer to your daily threshold of carbohydrate consumption as your Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing (CCLL). Stay below this number and you will experience ongoing weight loss. Go above it and your weight loss stalls. Here's how you'll determine your CCLL: Each week, you'll incrementally increase the quantity of carbohydrate you eat beyond the salad and one cup serving of vegetables allowed during Induction. These increments should measure roughly five grams of daily carbohydrates, representing what I call one "level".
During the first week on OWL, increase your daily carb intake from the 20 grams a day on Induction to 25 grams a day -going up one level. I recommend you add either another salad, half an avocado, a cup of cauliflower or six to eight stalks of sparagus or another vegetable. COntinue to eat this way for the rest of the week. As long as your weight loss continues steadily, you can go up another level -to 30 grams daily- the following week. If you are a veggie lover, you may be happy continuing to add more salad greens and other vegetables. Or you may choose to add a half-cup of cottage cheese, an ounce od sunflower seeds or a dozen macadamia nuts. If you have been feeling fruit deprived, now is the time to add berries, the fruits lowest on the glycemic index"....

So I couldn't find nothing saying anything about 3 days a week.. or so.. please help! I'm confused.

Re: OWL rules have a typo

I think Daniela is right. My understanding is that moving up a rung means you simply increase your carbs by 5 grams. The different food groups introduced (i.e., veggies, dairy, berries, nuts/seeds, alcohol) during their specific rungs are optional. I imagine that Dr. Atkins suggested that you limit a new food so you could see if it was a trigger or a stall-maker.

My personal plan as I move up the rungs is to increase the carbs by 5 grams/day/rung, but sticking to the food groups I ate on the previous rung for a week or so. Then, once I know that the carb increase is fine for continued weight loss, I will introduce the new food items suggested once or twice a week to see what happens...if I stall, I'll know it was the new food, rather than the increase in carbs and I can change my diet appropriately.

I believe this is what Dr. Atkins intended for the 3 days/week suggestion. I think it's as close to a scientific deduction (by controlling the variables) that is available to us for determining what our triggers/stallers are.

Re: OWL rules have a typo

Great explanation, Jamikins! Your daily totals should be five grams higher every day. But to identify problem trigger foods, only add them one at a time or on alternate days the first week you eat them. It really does help you identify which foods cause a problem. Even Atkins approved foods on a rung aren't necessarily good for your individual weight loss. For example, I am totally triggered by peanuts and cashews, but almonds are not a problem. By adding these things one at a time, I can see where I have problems and which food is causing them. I generally try to add five more carbs the first week without trying a new food so I know if I have reached my ACE (otherwise known as Critical Carb Level for Losing). Then I will add one or two of the new foods the next week and see if the individual foods cause a problem.

              GOAL THREE 199 ONE-DERLAND

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

I don't get any of this. I'm almost done with phase 1 and all i've been doing is eating anything as long as i eat 20 net carbs per day....
I was planning on jus adding another 5 carbs next week and see how that works out over the next two weeks.
Am i doing this all wrong?
You could do anything you set your mind to.

Weeeell - probably, depending on what food you have been choosing to eat.

Maybe you can list a typical day's eating in the 'Review my Menu' forum (Review My Menu - Atkins Diet) so we can help you get on track?

Though if you have not been eating 'the whites' (sugar/flour/pasta/starches etc) you might not have done too badly
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

So if you had a problem how would you figure out if it was because of the strawberries, blueberries, or the raspberries?

I agree with jamikins explanation. It needs to be a "controlled" experiment. Change only one variable at a time. If you are introducing multiple new foods and a problem arises there's not a way to pinpoint the cause.

jump ahead a few pages and you will see it clear as day in the rules of OWL section and since in the previous section you quoted he says to do it daily obviusly he didn't want you to skip eating the new food group 4 of the 7 days the first week.
