  • A word on why the scale only tells a small part of the story...

(cross posted from the CC, I thought it would help everyone, not just the CC group)

A few years back I dropped a bunch of weight on Atkins, but I did it without exercising at all. When I got down around 265 I put on a suit I hadn't worn in years, and it almost fit me... almost. I was pretty thrilled about that at the time... in 10lbs more it would have fit well. I weighed in this morning at 286 and unfortunately I've got a funeral to go to. My old "fat suit" I bought last year looked like a clown costume on me, so I decided before spending money on something I won't be able to wear soon, I'd try on the old suit.

It fits. it fits perfect, better than it did when I weighed in at 265. Just goes to show how little the scale can matter. I'm thinner right now at 286 than I was at 265.

Just something to ponder the next time you stall or get frustrated with those little numbers at your feet. Take pictures, take measurements, all 3 tell the tale, not just that evil little scale.

wow ron that is really crazy! i have a pair of black dress pants that fit me better when i weighed about 5 pounds less than i do now! well, i should say they fit differently. i am working out but my workout has changed. now i carry more weight in my thighs and less in the hips/abs....heck i guess i should do BOTH workouts and then i might just need a whole new pair of slacks!

that is a great thing to share with others, especially as we distrust ourselves and our progress and focus on that darn metal monster!

Ron, I have a similar story. When I lost weight in college, I got down to 165 -- the lowest I've ever been as an adult. At the time, my size was a 14/16. So, when I started Atkins, I pegged 165 and 14/16 as my goal size.

However, after losing 80+ pounds on Atkins (not to mention having 2 children), I was in a size 14/16 at 165 pounds. So, what will my goal size be when I reach 165 this time? I'm not really sure. MAYBE A 10?? I never would have thought...

I'll take inches over pounds any day!

Re: A word on why the scale only tells a small part of the story...

This is an interesting thread. Thanks for posting it!

When I started Atkins I set my weight goal at 130 based on the various BMI recommendations I've read and How I remember myself when younger. Deep down I still want to get to that.

But when I started jazzercise they did a BMI analysis with this little electronic gadget and she said my ideal weight would be around 169. I said NO WAY! She said when I get there I will be surprised, because it is the ratio of body fat to muscle that is important not the overall weight. She said with the excercise I will be surprised at how comfortable I feel with my weight and appearance at 169. I'm not there yet, so the jurys out, but this thread kind of confirms what she was saying.

Not sure if it is the one you mean but this one does illustrate the difference in size between the same weight of fat and muscle

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Oh i am so glad i read your post. I am on the third week of (extended) induction and have not lost a single pound !. I was getting frustrated and demotivated. Then yesterday i had no clean laundry and had to wear a bra that was way too tight the last time i wore it. In fact, before, i had to hook it first and struggle to pull it down because it wouldnt not fit (no idea why i bought it so small). Anyways yesterday i put it on and it fit like a dream !. WOW !! I couldnt believe it !
