    Default Diabetic **** and ignorance.

Well, here we are again. Worse off than I've probably ever been. If I do not do something soon, I feel like it's going to be too late to do anything. I have type 2 diabetes and have just not done enough or invested myself in my own treatment or taken control of anything. I flat out stopped taking meds for both my blood pressure and the Metformin a few months ago. I forced myself to go back to the doctor and get going again. I am back on 500 MG of Metformin x 2 and 10 MG of Lisinopril for BP. My diet sucks! I have been eating what my "normal" family eats and frankly, its killing me! I have not felt this horrible but felt close to this bad back in 2003 or so when I got on atkins and lost almost 60 pounds. I have probably had diabetes for years and just sneeked by on the physicals. I was diagnosed with type 2 and was put on meds. I caught **** for atkins by the dietitian at the hospital and was shamed into giving it all up. Well all of the things that were happening and all of the benefits that I felt when I got on this the first time are long gone. I am restarting as soon as I can get everything set up again to go and do this.
I'm back to close to 300
I'm really feeling horrible most of the time
    I dont sleep well
I crave eating all darned day.. i can be eating ad want to eat more.. thats just sick!!
I feel more broken down physically and mentally than ever before.
I need to get back on this WOE and tell everyone else to basically leave me alone! If this kills me, I'm dieing anyway!

I have been watching my daughter the past few months. She is diabetic, type 2, but on insulin because she hasn't been able to tolerate Metformin. She was taking 67 units of insulin when she started. She goes by the book, DANDR 2002. She is on 46 units of insulin now and, although I see her daily, I can literally see her melting in size before my eyes.

But that's not even the best part. Her personality has changed drastically. She has totally lost moody, crabby, swollen and worn out. She has replaced it with happy, bubbly, energetic, stronger and obviously healthier!

This will happen for you, too. Just do it. You'll see! I'm rooting for you!

Hi Fozzy. I am a Type II diabetic whose FBG has been as high as 294!! I have been following a low-carb plan for three months now and I have lost 24 pounds and my FBS now averages 98! There is a great diabetologist by the name of Dr. Richard Bernstein who has a low carb eating plan. Check out his website and his life story, you will be fascinated. It is www.diabetes-book.com. You MUST get your weight down by eating properly. You WILL avoid diabetic complications IF you follow Dr. Bernstein's plan. Do yourself a favor and check him out. Good Luck!

Thanks! The weirdest part of all of this is that (to me anyway) is that most people in the diabetes fields are so hostile towards low carb. I felt very demeaned and made to feel stupid by the dietitian / nurse or whatever who was telling me that unless 50% or more of my daily intake should be carbs.... I finally gave up and tried to do what they wanted, I cannot eat normal foods because I consider myself a food addict! I have to restrict myself from the things that are going to kill me and have been trying for a long time.

Do Atkins. Let your improved blood sugar and weight loss speak for itself.

    >>I cannot eat normal foods>>

Atkins is "normal" food! Think of "their" food as not normal!!!

I don't have diabetes but was definitely heading down that path quickly at the rate I was going.

I tried it my nutritionists way for a few weeks and I just couldn't do it either. I had cravings, hunger, bloating and felt awful. I couldn't control my eating and kept cheating. So I told her, let me try it my way (Atkins) and see what happens. The weight started melting off and I am in control of what I eat, I feel tons better, have lots of energy and all my numbers keep improving. Thus, she says to keep doing what I'm doing. I don't have her convinced that Atkins is healthy (I'm still working on that) and she'd like for me to eat more carbs and more fiber but as long as it's working and I'm not having any complications, she's supporting me.

I get frustrated by all these professionals that say how bad Atkins is, yet I don't see many people that are able to follow the diets they recommend very well anyway, so is being overweight and unhappy with what you are supposed to eat any better than any unknown long term effects Atkins may have (and are yet to be proven?) and yet it works for those that follow it correctly?

Well, I guess I should have said "The crummy for you normal foods that everyone else eats".

I like the basic REAL foods that this WOE insists upon.

Fozzy are you sure you didn't read my mind then post it on here? I am exactly in the same boat as you. I lost around 50 pounds on Atkins before and was able to get off my diabetic meds. Only problem was I stopped Atkins and the rest is history. Now I am back on the meds and feeling crummy. I plan on starting back Atkins at the begining of the year. I wish you the very best in your journey to control the weight and diabetes. Just know that you are not in this battle alone. Good Luck

I wasn't on the meds when I lost all the weight before. I'm not however saying that I was not at that time a diabetic. I have been skirting the issue for a long time and as long as I could squeek by on the D.O.T Physical I was "fine". Well, I wasn't fine, I was putting off the inevitable and rather than be placed out of work, a few weeks before my physical last year, I went the doctor and got diagnosed.

I am doing my best to surround myself with supportive people who can and do have the same problems that I have. I got bored with the diet before and started listening to "experts" who told me that this was bad for me. Now I'm back where I started and have to retake all the ground I lost.. this sucks!!

I was on 3 shots of fast acting insulin and one of long term...this was only 6 months ago....the specialist endocrinologist was 'disgusted' when I knocked back his suggestion of doing optifast replacement 3 times a day....told me Id get Glucoma and loose my toes...really nasty stuff....but you know what? I fixed him...Im not OFF all insulin....I take a long acting metaformin which has far less side effects...and Ive lost near on 59 kilos...

I dont scold myself EVER...each day is a clean slate...if I trip I get up and start each day with no guilt...I learn by my mistakes and carry on

Im not prefect and I still have a way to go....but um specialists have some peverse power (they think) to keep uslocked into a medical system that dones not work for diabetics...I was very angry for a long time...25 years on insulin I never really needed...but I use my anger to motivate me...I feel 20 years younger...I have enrgy....I have a life back...thats what I focus on

You can do this...my extire xmas dinner was Atkins friendly...trust me no one suffered lol....they loved the cheesecake with a nut crust...whipped cream with raspberries...you just have to love yourself enough to do it for you...your life is worth saving...Atkins is self medication and self actualisation...but um its tasty too
