| Hi Maureen!! Welcome back to Atkins! I am an avid runner and have been since November 2003. I've also been following Atkins since 2002, and have been in Lifetime Maintenance for 4 years. Right now, I am running upwards of 40-45 miles a week and just finished my first marathon at age 50!! My goal in doing the marathon was to prove to the world and to myself that carb-loading is a MYTH .. that you can run 26.2 miles fueled by Atkins! And sure enough!!! Typically, for a distance such as a 5k, you should be fine with a high protein, high fat meal 2 hours before the run and just bottled water for your hydration. I've never had to resort to any kind of powerade for 5ks or 10ks. I've probably done at least 30 or more 5ks in the past 2 and a half years and at least 15 10ks .. My pace is around 10:50 when I'm really crankin'. Not too bad for an old granny like me! What is your pace per mile? Just curious. Do you have heart rate monitor? If not, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND A POLAR. I have the M61 and I love it. They are indispensible tools for making sure you are not overexerting yourself. Anyway, all this to say, you should be able to easily do a 10k following a high fat/high protein plan and drinking enough water before and during the race. I bought myself one of those FUEL BELT hydration thingies for the marathon which worked very well. If you get up to marathon distance, you may want to try the Sugar Free SOBE NO FEAR energy drink .. it worked well for me during those 26.2 miles! Stay away from sugared drinks! Come join us on the Cool Running thread that I start every week in the Exercise Forum. Its a fun way to keep track of your accomplishments! HAPPY TRAILS! Betty
