Red face I'm new here -This HAS to be my last diet!

I've tried every other diet I can think of, since about 1976. At that time, sweet sixteen, I was "too fat" at 125 pounds, 5'7" tall. JEEZ! how I'd like to even get back to even 145! Then, I tried the "Anorexia" route, Binge/purge, excessive exercise, etc., only to discover 'weight rebound plus' once people said I was too thin at 118 lbs. and stopped.

Over the next few years I oscillated between junk food ad libitum, and newer, "better" diets that I obsessively read and studied, because the weight just kept coming right back (if I managed to stay on the diet at ALL) and then kept ON coming!

At the end of a long liquid protein and lemon juce semistarvation diet, followed by 18 miles continuous jogging, a single chocolate chip cookie followed by Ipecac was enough to blow months of work. My metabolism at the end of such diets is so resistant I can gain weight on 700 calories per day! And that was in younger days!

EVENTUALLY I found an early ATKINS book, and tried it, finding it to be far more pleasant than any other diets. I am nuts about meat, seafood, eggs and cheese!! But still, I was a junk food junkie at heart, had not yet discovered how valuable supplements are, and my off-diet food choices were usually of the all-you-can-eat buffet for under $10 variety plus LOTS of beer! And being compelled, having married, moved twice and had a baby, to feed the family, my dieting faded into oblivion. My butt grew.

Less than legal weight loss methods were tried - which would control my appetite for awhile, but of course, that had to end. Eating the same foods, but counting calories always failed as willpower lasted only so long as my glycogen supply, and I'd begin pigging out once again.

I did Atkins again, (having learned and grown religious about nutrition and supplements), after my divorce and moving in with Mother, a nurse. She said that the high protein diets like Atkins should not ever be done for a long time, that it was bad for you. She was also a temptress whenever I had lost back an inch or two. But every time I took a break, in a few months, I found myself ripping my pants when I sat down.

Last August, 2005, she complemented me when I got "down" to 170 lbs. from 190 at the beach. I'm still 5'7". I don't live with her anymore, and my son is ready to help me so long as I still feed him kid-food.

My weight at 222 and another ripped pair of pants (52 pounds heavier in just 6 months !!! So, if I don't get it right this time I should soon die. I don't care what Mom says - this HAS to be my last diet!!! I'm plenty healthy still aside from the weight, and keen on nutrients and other supplements.

Someone has got to be here who can relate to this. I'm so glad I found this site! Has anyone stayed in induction for more than 3 months, is my question. That should knock me back into last year's swimsuit, at least. What's the longest I can do it safely?

I'm so glad you found us, too! Welcome to ADBB. You'll get a lot of support and answers to your questions here.

Don't be afraid of Atkins. It's the healthiest way to eat and there's lots of scientific proof to back it up. If you haven't already done so, I strongly recommend that you buy and read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002). WalMart has it for about $6. The book is so well-written and I think it's easier to follow this WOE if you understand how and why it works so well.

In answer to question about induction, I believe Dr. Atkins said that if you have a lot of weight to lose, you can certainly do induction for a long time. Having said that, though, many people find it too restrictive and need to move onto OWL so that they can expand their food choices. See what works for you and good luck!

Smile Re: I'm new here -This HAS to be my last diet!

Thanks! I'm also new to this kind of web stuff in general - so could use a tip or 2 like how to put the trackers and other pictures in, and what WOE and OWL mean. And where the line is on not QUITE following the rules...

I just munched a whole bundle of fresh asparagus, followed by several pieces of fried chicken, with as much skin & breading removed as possible. But a little of that made it in me. Hope I'm still in ketosis.

I've been kinda doing my own idea of induction since 2/27/06 when I was 222# and I'm not sure how well my diet qualifies as Atkins at this point. I dug out a ketostick last night and ...the 1st time I've EVER gotten a color change!!! Not much, but exciting, because I've been on the scales 2-3x/day (no-no, I just learned), and they haven't budged much since 3/7. Just up/down based on PMS, salt & water retention, and time of day. My home scales lie, too, if I shift my weight on them. I'm keeping records vie the digital one here at the office. The 222# is now 209#.

tey reading Dr Atkins book DR ATKINS NEW DIET REVOLUTION 2002 edition. that is what we use here and you will know muching a bunch depending on your amount for a bunch could ore could not be legal.
We ahve a coopy of the acceptable foods lists in the stickies of the induction fourm but 3 cups of all aceptable veggies is the maximum amount we can have a day during induction which is why most folk move to OWL and get more of those yummy veggies while still losing weight. the $7 you spend for the book will be the best investment you make in yourself.

What are you doing as the mandatory exercise part of your Atkins?

Happy low carbing

Default Re: I'm new here -This HAS to be my last diet!

Thanks again for your gracious help. I'm learning a lot on this site today; will try to get the book after work or this weekend. I've browsed a lot today (boss is out ).
I see asparagus is limited to 1 cup if salad veggies is no more than 2. I would guess that my bundle=~12-15 young stalks, or about 2 cups packed. With no other veggies today, I guess it will pass, though. To be on the safe side I'll bump up the exercise.

I know I MUST exercise!!! After days 1-3, which was very clean start, but tough as to be expected, my energy level soared. I went from a 10 min. walk with hills and about 50 stairs climbed (once up, once down each) to twice that, then took a 2-day break cuz I hurt for 2 days. Then went to 3x that, and am starting to do short bursts of jogging on my walk now.

The toughest part is, I SIT at this machine from 8:30am to 5pm M-F, with 30 minutes for "lunch". I SIT in the car to and from the office and the daycare, too.
What to do??? The snacks are in my deskdrawer - home made jerky with no sugar, pork skins (not BBQ flavor), bouillon cubes, imitation seawater crystals (minerals), epsom salts (Magnesium), and ingredients for an ECA-or-similar boost (I know, caffeine), plus a ziplock of meat and sometimes some veggies. Then I've got my 30 minutes to hit the 5 flights of stairs to level C from the 2nd floor!
Ok, so I'm not using the whole 30 minutes yet, but I'm trying to squirm, stretch, and but-clench in my chair, and got a long stretchy band for resistance exercises.

Good luck to you this weekend! I'm headed out!!

You're going to do great!

WOE means "way of eating" and OWL means "Ongoing Weight Loss" (which is the next phase after induction). You'll get used to the shorthand around here pretty quickly, I'm sure. There may even be a sticky somewhere that lists a few of them.

Hey kiddo! Welcome to the Boards!

Read the book, and take your time. Following your "own" version of Atkins does NOT work -- follow the book please!! Also, clean your house of all junk food, if you feel you will be tempted by any of it. For the sake of your son, teach him that there are no "kid-friendly" foods, just foods that will make him overweight and on the path of Type II diabetes in the future. Besides, you're the MOM!!! You get to choose what food you buy! LOL! If anything, now is an excellent time to teach him how to eat whole, nutritious food for the rest of his life.

Personally, I lost 17 pounds in Induction, in about 4 weeks. I hit an emotional bump in the road and fell off the wagon, but I'm back on to do another clean 2 weeks before I move to the OWL rungs. So many people on this Board has been on extended Inductions, so there will be lots of advice popping up! Also, jump around the posts and read - there is so much information here.

I wish you the best of luck!!

Big love,
Stacy

HI I JUST WANTED TO ADD THAT I HAVE NEVER READ THE BOOK AND I JUST FOLLOWED WHAT THE ATKINS WEB SITE OFFERED! I STAYED ON THE INDUCTION PHASE FROM JAN-MAR THEN I GOT OFF THE DIET BUT LET ME TELL YOU - FOR ME, I LOVED IT!!

IN THE MORNING I DRANK THE SHAKES, THEN FOR LUNCH I HAD THESE SOUPS THAT YOU CAN BUY ANYWHERE, THAT ARE CARB-CONTROLLED AND ITS CHICKEN AND CHEESE SO ITS VERY YUMMY AND THEN FOR DINNER I WOULD HAVE ANY MEAT WITH A SALAD OR JUST EXTRA MEAT BECAUSE I LOOOOOOOVE MEAT.

IF YOU CRAVE JUNK, WHAT I WOULD DO IS EAT THE ATKINS' BARS OR PEANUTS! BUT THOSE YOU CAN'T HAVE DURING THE INDUCTION PHASE BUT TO ADD THOSE AFTER THE INDUCTION AND CONTINUE EATTING AS IF U ARE IN PHASE ONE WON'T AFFECT YOU BECAUSE THE FIRST TWO WEEKS IS SOLELY TO JUMP START YOUR METABOLISIM!

WELL I HOPE I WAS ABLE TO HELP SOME WAY - GOOD LUCK AND HANG IN THERE, WE'RE ALL GOING THROUGH THIS TOGETHER!!

I have been on induction since January 1 and I intend to stay on induction until I have reached at least half of my goal but probably more like two-thirds of my goal weight. It IS possible to stay on it and NOT get bored. I have found some helpful recipes to get me thru those times when I needed something sweet or something salty or whatever that needs attending to before I jump ship. All I can say is keep the faith, DON'T give up because it will mean you will only habve to start over and we all know how much is sucks to start over. Remember NOTHING tastes as good as thin feels!
