Smile FORMER DANCER and Yo Yo dieter beginning ATKINS

hello,

I am so excited to be here. I have reviewed the site periodically but never posts due to fear about this WOE and the nervousness about all the future problems that people claim low carbers will endure in the future. But after researching articles and reading the book, I amjust about convinced.. it really makes sense.

I have been yo-yo dieting tremendously for the past 3 years. I would fast for a few days and restrict my diet to 500 to 1000 calories per day while excercising up to 2 hours a day. I would also end up binging weeks on end gaining a few pounds then returning to the restrictive lifestyle. See I was with a dance troupe and the desire to be thin in exotic costumes for large audiences has sparked my obsession with my weight.
Now that I am writing this out, it sounds like anorexia OMG! But now I am a little older and my metabolism is just about out of wack. I started atkins for about a week now and have already lost 5 pounds in five days. It takes longer on a restrictive diet water weight or not.

Unfortunately Until today, I overloaded on carbs and I DIDNT EVEN WANT IT! This really depresses me.

Nevertheless, I realized that this WOE is easier to mantain than avoiding food and counting calories. For the past week I have never gotten really hungry or craved carbs at all. But a few things concern me.

1. Due to my constant yoyo dieting, if I have another carb attack, will this damage my metabolism even further?

2. I ate chicken breasts with provolone cheese, peanuts salads, sardines kale and spinach all week. I DONT feel hungry or tired, just really strange. What is this? Sugar withdrawal, I thought I would be irratable or drained . I also feel a dull pain or pressure in my abdomin. what could be the cause?

3. How long does it take to actually see results? I really dont have much to lose (10-15 pounds) Is there a 10 to 15 pound club here? maybe I should start a thread because it seems like the slower you lose the smaller you are.

Anyway! I am so happy to be here and I look forward to your replies.

Sincerely your new atkins friend Disciplined1

I think you need to sit down and actually read Atkins' whole book. Peanuts are inappropriate for the 14-day induction. You can eat more than 5 foods.

You really need to read through the whole thing and understand the whole reasoning behind *why* Atkins works instead of just throwing yourself willy-nilly at it and not following the directions. You'll never get perfect results without perfect planning.

And yes, I truly believe that when we treat Atkins like a week-long "diet" and only use it to trim off a few pounds and then go back to our lifestyle, we are destroying our metabolism. We have to eat healthy and eat for life.

Best wishes to you.

HI! Welcome to the board!

What type of dance do you do?

Definitly pick up the 2002 Dr. A's book, if you already haven't, you'll find a lot of great information in it that will help you. And you don't have to count calories...isn't that great?

Best wishes on your journey and remember to take care of you.

Sounds like an awesome dance! I bet you get a great work out.

Calories definitly matter, it's a matter of how you eat them.

Chapter 2 in DANDR (2002 version), page 17, talks about calories.

Dr. A even says so in these paragraphs that gaining weight from taking in more calories then you expand can cause weight gain...and that's true.

The idea with eating this low carb is that your appetite should decrease and your calorie intake also decreases because you're not eating a ton of glucose carbs that will trigger you to keep eating more, and over eating those carbs with more calories.

In the beginning we don't count calories, just carbs to get in the idea of learning how to eat in moderation with the veggie, protein, and fat carbs to help us lose weight and make our glucose levels balanced.

Hope that makes sense. Reading the book makes things even more easier to understand.
