Default New to Atkins - Carb Addict - Need Support!

Hello all, I'm a newbie here at the forums, and to the lifestyle that is low carb. My name is Jess, and I'm 24, a full time mom and full time nursing student.

I'm going to be starting on the atkins diet, and basically want to limit the carbs to 20-40g per day. I have a relative who's been on the diet for a couple wks and has lost pretty steadily so I figured I'd do my best. I, of course am a complete carb junkie. I crave them and when I do, will do just about anything until my craving is satisfied. (ie. pizza, potatoes, french fries...okay I'll stop now) I hope to be strong though and I came here for support and so far everything looks great.

I made it through one day thusfar considering I started mid day yesterday I was completely full last night from a turkey salad and a hard boiled egg, which I was surprised by, and I hope I can still have some variety in my diet which I absolutely need to be sane. I'm not one of those people who can eat the same thing all te time.

My food log today consisted of:

Breakfast: 1 hardboiled egg, 2 scrambled eggs, water
Lunch: lettuce w/ turkey, 1 oz mozz cheese, olive oil, red wine vinegar
Snack: leb bologna rolled with one slice cheese
So Far: 40oz water

I feel satisfied but I need things that are easily accessible for snacking purposes. When I read or do work online, I need a quick fix and have no ideas how to survive this w/o carbs.

Any tips, advice, are more than welcome.

Jess,

First and foremost I think it's pretty essential that you read the book (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revlution/DANDR). The book is a great read if you are interested in this sort of thing. I learned so much from it. It's always useful to go and check up if you are unsure about a specific food group or whatever. You can't just assume you know what is and isn't allowed in the diet.

Everyone has the notion that the Atkins diet is all meat and fat, but this isn't the case.

Secondly, if you are not drinking a ton of water, start. Essential.

Third, if you aren't taking a multivitamin, start.

Start with induction and follow it to a T. Later on you can move through the other stages of the diet, but a clean induction is essential. If you don't, you'll always be wondering if you are short changing yourself.

Lastly, use the forum. There are a ton of people going through what you are/will. We are all humans and have essentially the same biology - there will be someone that's been there/done that.

Hi Jess, welcome to the board, please keep in mind that vegetables mean more than just lettuce. It is essential to keep your veggies up to keep from getting constipated. Try to get at least half of your carbs for the day for your veggies. Stay with us, keep posting and watch the weight fly. Good luck!

Day 2:

woke up feeling a little tired, but after a little while and a step on the scale I was feeling much better.

Then I had breakfast:

3 eggs scrambled with mushrooms, tomatoes, mozz chs
4 slices bacon
water

and I feel great

Went out last night and bought chicken, more turkey, tuna, more lettuce, and lots of veggies to get me through induction.
Still have to keep all the crap bread in the house because of Justin and Brendon, but I'm getting through the temptations fine so far. I think today will be easy.

With a breakfast like that - I can't see how you wouldn't be feeling good. I eat eggs and bacon almost every morning. I love it so much.

You should really read the book and do a clean induction... you said that you'llkeep carbs between 20 - 40, but on the first 2 weeks that you're on this diet, you need to keep it below 20. If you don't read the book, you'll probably make a lot of mistakes without even noticing it, and then you might feel the diet doesn't work... so try to do it by the book, and you wont regret it.. and use this forum, you'll find more support than you can expect.

I have read the book, and am keeping my carbs under 20g a day. I just meant that after induction I would like them to be up near the 40g range if possible

Hey Jess and welcome, I am a Jess too...the great thing about "wanting to go up to 40g carbs" is that there is a ladder you climb bringing back different food groups one at a time, to secure and make sure you keep the weight off. It's in the book...
You will see people have the ladder on their signature, what rung they are on...
So, you will get to move back up one step at a time...pretty cool....
