...hello. Been lurking on this board for a few days now and impressed by the positivity ! I'm 5'1", very, very tiny build and weigh about 150 pounds, which, whilst not huge, is definitely too much for my little frame! I'm in a bit of an odd position - always been healthy and quite fit (I run, bike 10 miles a day to get to work and back, I do all sorts of other sports and walk everywhere (not so hard in the UK!) BUT I recently got badly injured and now i can't move much, so pretty much all excercise is out of the window (boo!) Obviously, my ususal (healthy) diet of complex carbs, piles of fruit and veg, lean protein, red wine and tons of water is not compatible with being a couch potato. I'm putting weight on, and for someone small, fit and healthy it's pretty upsetting (along with feeling really down i can't go out and run!) ...SO....thought i'd try a low-carb approach as i know sugar doesn't agree with me. Looking forward to the journey and (hopefully) your help and support.

one question (I ususally have porridge in a morning to fuel a 5 mile bike ride to work after mucking out 2 horses) what on earth do i have for breakfast that isn't eggy, meaty or processed? it's the only time i miss my carbs !

Welcome to the board Squiff, its always nice to see new fellow uk people!

To answer your question re breakfast, dont feel that you necessarily have to stick with "traditional" breakfast foods. A lot of people on here will have left over foods from the night before. Also, intead of egg / meat for breakfast, I quite often have mushrooms for breakfast (with my egg). But if you don't "do " eggs, how about a small square of cheese?

There are loads of ideas really, take a look around the site you will be inundated with inspiration.

good luck

Rich

You are allowed mushrooms, but only limited. They are one of the "2 cups per day" vegetables. See below! Veggies must be split through out the day and not all at once.

Vegetables
You can have two to three cups per day of:

alfalfa sprouts
daikon
mushrooms
arugula
endive
parsley
bok choy
escarole
peppers
celery
fennel
radicchio
chicory
jicama
radishes
chives
lettuce
romaine lettuce
cucumber
moche
sorrel
These salad vegetables are high in phytonutrients and provide a good source of fiber.

Other Vegetables
You can have one cup per day of these veggies if salad does not exceed two cups. The following vegetables are slightly higher in carbohydrate content than the salad vegetables:

artichoke
celery root
pumpkin
artichoke hearts
rhubarb
asparagus
chard
sauerkraut
bamboo shoots
collard greens
scallions
dandelion
snow peas
bean sprouts
dandelion greens
spaghetti squash
beet greens
eggplant
spinach
broccoli
hearts of palm
string or wax beans
broccoli rabe
kale
summer squash
brussels
kohlrabi
tomato
bean sprouts
leeks
turnips
cabbage
okra
water chestnuts
cauliflower
onion
zucchini
If a vegetable, such as spinach or tomato, cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.
