Talking Atkins All The Way!

My name is Dave. I'm 43, married and I have two kids 15 and 17. I have hypertension, moderately high cholesterol and a lot of times I am just plain tired. I want to lose weight once and for all and eliminate the meds as well.

This is my second time with Atkins. My first time was about 10 years ago when I lost about 35 pounds in about two months. I left the program then because I started listening to the critics who said the program was unhealthy. I put my weight back on plus a whole lot more in the last 10 years, but now I'm back.

I have been on Atkins for about two weeks now. It feel so good to have energy again and to feel alert. I forgot about that as a benefit of the program. I don't feel stuffed or bloated any longer from the low fat diets that I "tried" to follow. I haven't weighed myself yet to see how much I lost, but my shirts are fitting much more loosely and I have to walk with my hand in my pants pocket to prevent them from falling down.

I bought a video package (two vids) last night for the Atkins program at a store called Family Dollar for only $3. It was what I needed to feel re-assured about the program. Doctor Atkins is very convincing and of course, everything does make sense. The line that sticks with me the most is when he said, "...as long as you are in ketosis, you can't lay down fat...if you are in ketosis...your body won't store fat - it burns it for fuel..."

I confirmed that I'm in ketosis using the keto-stix. I can tell when I'm in ketosis based on how I feel, sleep, etc. but I like that little bit of confirmation once in a while just to know for sure I'm eating within the plan.

What amazes me is the critics. When I go to Burger King, I remove the bun and just eat the meat and veggies. My co-worker eats the entire sandwich along with fries, but yet he tells me, "The high protien fatty diets aren't good for you." I know of other people who are the same way.

I really enjoy reading posts in this group and I hope I can come here for help when I need it and maybe provide help to others as well as time goes on.

Take Care,
Dave

Dave... it's really good news that you've come back to Atkins. Welcome! Soon you'll be feeling fantastic and looking trimmer.

Don't worry about Atkins being unhealthy. Most people find that after a few weeks their numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar) improve dramatically. If you think about it... after induction (and most of the diet is post-induction, or should be) all you are doing is cutting out sugar, refined flours and highly processed foods while increasing your veggies. Nothing very unhealthy about that. The fat you eat is necessary... as you use it for fuel, so it doesn't have those unhealthy repercussions... (besides, there is lots of evidence that saturated fats are not the evil monsters they've been made out to be for so long... quite the contrary).

Join a challenge, start a journal, make friends... there's lots for everyone here at ADBB.

Happy losing!

Talking Re: Atkins All The Way!

Thanks all of you. Your pictures are very inspirational. I'll stop by the other threads as well.

I would really like to find a thread that talks about a few success stories regarding how blood pressure decreases, cholesterol goes down, etc. I just want to get off of these goofy medicines for blood pressure.
Thanks again,
Dave
