Default Big Jim here... hello ADBB... goodbye carbos!

I am a big guy, even without discussion of weight. I played sports, especially basketball, in school. I ate anything I wanted and never gained an ounce. Chalk it up to metabolism and activity. Fast forward 20 years... wow, what is this bulk under my shirt that bounces when I run... or even walk fast... and gets in the way when I tie my shoes... and causes my shorts to ride up... and makes me look fat in photos? </end of ignorance about my weight>

I didn't just look fat, I WAS fat! No special glasses, optical illusions, best angles, sticking the chin out or oversized tent shirts were going to hide it anymore, now that I couldn't hide it from myself.

I found Atkins through the negative recommendation of my sister, the nutritionist and registered nurse. This was almost a decade ago, when Atkins was lesser known and even less favored by the "educated." Well, honestly, I don't like my sister very much, so I read a book about it. I am a carnivore by nature anyway, and tried it without exercise or any other consideration, and it worked. I lost 30 pounds in a few months. Cool. I proceeded to drop the WOE and resume combining carbs with fats. Can you guess what happened? Bloop! Deja vu + 5 years! Here come the bunched-up boxers again! Can any of you relate?

Well, I got some bloodwork done at the end of 2006 and, having turned 40 last year, was actually paying attention when the Doctor told me to lose weight or look forward to an early death, from pending ailments all related to my weight, cholesterol, sugars, liver, blah blah blah. My knees were hurting from just getting around. 333 pounds is a good chunk of weight, even if I am almost seven feet tall. After praying about it and waiting for His yes/no, it was an easy choice to make. Adopt the WOE, exercise and give up carbs and sugars. It was that or test that life insurance policy early.

I swim 45 minutes per day, as a prelude to more moderate exercises soon to come. I have sex as often as possible. I drink as much water as possible. I have spent nights reading this board. I have printed up cheat sheets, meal plans, etc. And yes, I have read "the Book" (NDR). I am ready to add Atkins to my means to health. The support to others posting on this board is great, and I want to stay current with you folks. In advance, thank you for your words to me and everyone else needing them on this board.

Hey Bigjim! Welcome to the board. It's always nice to have other men on the board, which is inundated by women! Post often, you will have no trouble finding the support and friendship it requires to stay with this WOE!

We have a Veggie Challenge going starting Monday. Join up with us and meet lots of people there too!
