Default New To Atkins and Amazed So Far

Hey there everyone! This seems like a great site - so much useful information and a nice mechanism for support. Thanks to all who have developed this over the years - and compiled so much info for newbies like me to review.

Anyway, I'm a 36 year old guy... started the diet on Monday morning. I'm going traditional Atkins - clean induction. Just got the ketostyx yesterday - and I think purple is my new favorite color. I'm at the moderate end of the continuum on the color scale - and I'm happy with that. I've been, by my count anyway, averaging about 19-21 carbs a day and about 85 - 95 fl oz of water. What I can't believe is how fast it is working... although I know it'll slow down somewhat as time goes on. I'd been working out pretty hard for the past 3 weeks or so (and occasionally before that) and was a bit frustrated at my lack of progress weight wise. I began at about 250 and was still at about 248 even after 3 weeks of this pretty rigorous routine.

Well, as I said, I started the diet on Monday - at roughly 248 pounds - and today weighed in at about 238. I've worked out twice... and as I said I push myself pretty hard. My typical routine is 30 minutes on the elliptical (usually burn about 400 calories) and then 35 minutes jogging / running a hill program (incline from 2.5 - 7. on the treadmill at about 5 MPH. I burn another 400-450 calories there. Then I lift weights for about 40 minutes.

I'm also happy with how good I feel. I had a bit of a headache yesterday but today I feel absolutely great. I'm not having too much trouble with the restrictive induction diet yet - so I may try to stay on it for awhile as long as the weight keeps coming off. Anyway, nice to meet you all... I'll be around here pretty regularly for awhile.

Hey Pat! Welcome to the board. It's great to see that you're doing everything by the book, including a clean induction! That's the way to success.

I hope your headache goes away tomorrow, drink lots of water!

Wow! Congratulations on the 10 pounds so far! Great job.

Welcome to the Bulletin Board. You'll love it here. There are so many fantastically supportive people.

Also, about the Ketostyx: I know they're really fun to use, but don't be too discouraged if at some point they don't turn pink or purple. They aren't the most reliable things in the world. You can really tell you're in ketosis by the "ketosis breath" (which is actually sweet, not gross as one might imagine) and, of course, by the fact that you're losing weight.

Keep posting!

Hi PAt and WELCOME TO THE ADBB!
just a quick word about the ketostix - it doesnt need to show purple -- as long as it registers you are on the right track. If you are properly hydrated it will show traces of Ketones( if it shows dark purple you need to drink more water!)Also if you test after excercising it may not show any ketones as you will have burnt these off with your workout. Sounds like you are heading in the right direction - WELL DONE

Hello there and welcome to the board! Nice to have you join up with us.
You're doing really well so far... congratulations! Exercise and water are fundamental to success when eating Atkins style, so you're absolutely on the right track for long term weight loss!

Don't worry about the ketostix... they mean little. Many people have gotten to goal comfortably, without their ever having registered a colour at all. There are so many variables. Also, purple does not necessarily mean you are burning body fat. You could be burning fat you consumed (say, if you were to overdo it), so use the stix only as a rough guide.

Happy Atkineering!

Thanks everyone! I feel very welcome here. I'm still chugging along - I thought the 238 the other day might have just been a fluke - water weight, whatever. But, 235 on the scale this AM... I know it can't continue at this pace but WOW... just unbelievable... already one latch in on the belt too! I just wish I had done this 15 years ago!
