Default Newbie - Intro

Hello Everyone,

I am thrilled to have found this site. I attempted a modified Atkins plan a few years ago and did really well, but did not follow through after about 2 months. I only read a few paragraphs from the Atkins book, I didn't really have a full understanding of the plan and what it entailed, thats why I say I did a "modified" plan, basically I cut back on white starch carbs only, breads, flour and pasta type; that was it; except for rice. I continued to eat rice regularly.

Frankly speaking, I have not been able to stay motivated. I am just at a standstill and I need to do something. I just ordered the DVD, book and the Atkins cookbook. They should arrive in a few days, until then I have just been collecting data from the Net; that's how I stumbled upon this site. According to some of the postings here; I have a lot to learn in order to follow the plan correctly this time. I am a bit intimidated by all of information. It appears that you have to develop your own meal plan to follow, sounding like work on my part. It doesn't help that I am a Nurse and just finished a college level nutrition class. Atkins goes against most of all the principles of healthy intake that I just learned about; plus the little basics of nutrition that already knew of. So I know I must go in this with an open mind, this may take some time to relearn and understand the theories behind Atkins. I am about 20 Ibs overweight, BMI is 27, however my personal desire is to lose about 35 Ibs. So that's my story and I am sticking to it. I hope to find the support I need to make this endeavor a successful one. Take care everyone.

Hiya SadieMae and welcome aboard! Good to have you with us.

I'd advise you read the book from cover to cover. It explains so much and is really invaluable. Understanding the science behind the programme is fundamental for success.
The version you want (if yours is not this one) is the 2002 edition of DANDR (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution). That's the one this board follows as it was the last one Dr A wrote in its entirety and hasn't had other "pens" messing around with it.

Happy losing! You can do it... we'll help.

Hi Sadie!
I agree with the previous posts read, read, read! I am also a nurse and I had the same problem when I thought about this life change. I have only been on the plan for 10 days and I have lost 6 pounds The more I read..the more it made good sense. This message board is excellent for evidence of good health when the plan is followed correctly. Get familiar with the different stages of the plan and the acceptable food lists. There is a recipe section that is awesome. I made pizza last night with a cauliflower crust and my family ate it up!

Thank you ALL of you for the warm welcome. I have noted all your great suggestions. My Book is here, brought from Amazon Market Place - brand new.... it' s the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and wow it is great so far, a lot more than the initial 1992 version......and I am digging in every moment I can. Will take some pics tomorrow and start on Monday. I am looking forward to finally changing my life, my thought process and becoming successful in something I really want......

Hey Razzle we just have to forget about it.... excuse me,
I am a New Yorker....LOL
Science is truly amazing....the logic here is incredible. If this is true and it looks like it is, according to the success rates. Atkins was brave in defying all of what we thought we knew about nutrition.

Congrats to all of you on your success.....

Happy Weekend.....

Thanks for the support.

Hi Sadie
If you like science, and it sounds like you do, you may want to read Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. He explaines some more about the science behind low carb in there as well as how come low carb theories have not become mainstream within the science world (But I think that is slowly changing) It is a heavy read you want to get through Atkins first. And get into the diet

Here is an article Taubes wrote for the New York Times
What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie? - New York Times
