mazu420 is on a distinguished road
Default hello, i am brand new to atkins & have ???'s

i started induction on monday and i've lost a few lbs which is great, however, after reading postings i think i may not be eating as well as i thought i was. i have been eating the atkins bars & shakes because i thought it was ok, but it seems it's not. so i will stop those right away. also, i suspect that my carb intake has been a bit higher than 20, maybe 30-40 on the high end? is this ok or does it have to be 20 or lower?

on the website i notice it says that you could start at OWl if you had "minimal weight loss." so this got me thinking, i would like to lose about 15 lbs so should i have started at OWL or INDUCTION? is 15 lbs minimal? am i already doing OWL since my carb intake is likely higher than 20?

finally, i am a vegetarian (eat eggs & dairy) so this is not the easiest diet for me but i am sticking with it!

i would really appreciate any tips, suggestions, advice.

thanks guys!

Greetings, Mazu

Welcome to ADBB!

First, I just need to point out that this board is centered around the 2002 version of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, and that is what the information and advice here is based upon. This is also why that information will not match what is on the website for Atkins the company. While Dr. Atkins did allow for shakes in an emergency in the 2002 DANDR, they were never meant to be used on a consistent basis in the place of whole, fresh food. Atkins the company, their website, and all of their print advertising promote the bars and shakes to be used daily. (they are a very lucrative product for them) As each individual reacts differently to certain foods, you would need to test them for yourself to see how they affect you. I know from my own personal experience, and from the experience of many other members here (though not all), that they are a known staller.

Here is a link to a "sticky" that I placed at the top of this forum that contains lots of good information that may answer some of your questions. If you are NEW, READ THIS!

Best wishes to you!

Hi Mazu Yes, I think 15 pounds counts as 'minimal' You can also have tofu, which Atkins refers to as soy cheese. Moving up the rungs will allow you more protein choices in the fresh cheese, nut and seed department, and eventually legumes as well. I use organic black soybeans as a meat stretcher. They're the lowest carb legumes you'll find.
