A newbie here but wanted to say that I'm the same age as you are. Seems as though when menopause strikes it hits a person in the tummy and it swells. I've heard it called estrogen belly.
It's much harder to take off the pounds than it used to be.

I'm not sure what to do either. I'm just following the book right now and counting, keeping a diary of my carbs.
