Default hi my names andrea

hi im new to this forum and thought id just say hi to everyone and let u no who i am and alittle about me.
my name is andrea
i live in victoria australia.
im a mother of 4.
im 38yrs old
have been doing atkins for 2 weeks now (watched my daugther once lose 24kgs on the diet but she put it back on over 4 yrs ) she is currently again on this and has lost 14kgs.
i got told i had type 2 diabettes a year ago and didnt believe them because i had some blood tests that said i was still within normal range and maybe boardering on having it. plus i had some heart problems that needed medication that u couldnt have diabettes medication with.
then i had a test 2 weeks ago when i had decided to go on atkins as my daugther had lost so much in only 4 weeks)
and i lost 6 kgs in a week.
found out then that my blood test shows i have a fairly high level of protain leaking from my kidneys that is showing some failing. so im now on medication for diabettes and doing my diet.
when i first tried medication a yr ago it kepted sending me into hypos and scared the living daylight out of me.
so now im scared being on atkins and medication that with no or hardly any carbs that i will have hypos again, so i drink a cup of tea or coffee 2 times aday to just add that little more sugar to my diet.
iam now only on a low does of metformin tablets for the time being as the doctor said it was a very low dose and with me on diet it will be ok (1 500mg tablet in the morning)
anyway ill leave it here as i will be asking questions later on after i have read up posts i guess. thank u

Hi Andrea not to sound like your mother, but be sure your doctor knows you are doing a low-carb diet....he may adjust your meds.
Good luck to you and your daughter. it's good you have a diet buddy

Hi Andrea! Good on ya for looking after your health and taking charge!

Since you already have a nephrotic syndrome, you need to be EXTRA careful if you decide to stick with Atkins as the high fat aspect can be very hard on your kidneys. You don't want to burn up the glomeruli you have remaining. The moderate amount of meat intake described by the Atkins way of eating is good but you may want to scrutinize (and perhaps alter if need be) your intake of egg yolks, cheeses, butter and other saturated fats and of course your salt intake. Unsaturated fats (olive oil, fish, nuts, etc) are fine.

One nice thing I noticed in your post was that you are on Metformin. You'll be happy to know that studies have shown that the drug actually helps people keep weight off as they lose it responsibly as opposed to other diabetic medications which are known for weight gain. Talk about great news!

With the help of your doctor and a little tweaking of the eating plan to protect your renal health, I bet you'll be well on your way to better health (whether Atkins is right for you or not) in no time. Welcome aboard!

You should definitely consult your doctor first because the DANDR says that people with kidney problems should not do Atkins. Page 120. It would scare me.

thanks everyone for the concern, But the doctor knows i am on the diet, and im being careful and not going to over board.
I aint eatting heaps of fats as should be, and only having 2 small meals aday ect heres what we had tonite (daugther and i had 2 really small chicken breasts that we fried in pam cheese thats it for dinner today for lunch i had 1 and a half pieces of fish grilled.
and i couldnt help myself after tea i had 1 low cal jelly that had 0.14gs of sugar in it and a small amount of cream, and 2 cups of tea one at nite and one in morning.
thats the size of what we eat in a day.
we also add as much as we can some vegies too on our other meals on other days.
i aint a big eatter and never have been.
never had breakfast and not always had lunch and only a small cooked meal of what ever i feed the kids. (who always fight over who got my left overs) we then shared a packet of chips later at nite which was the worst habit i had as i crave salt never sugar. we would have takeaways one nite a week and mostly pretty high carbs in all our food i guess (since i now have seen how much is on packets lol) anyway im going to modify my diet again now since these posts, cause i didnt think about doing more damage to my kidneys i will cook meals more low fat cooking way eg grill or roast them and maybe look at some more healther ways to diet but keep with the atkins mostly.(i no it works my daugther did lose 24kgs on it in 4months once)
will go back and see the doctor and talk about the risks of this diet on my kidneys and health.
tried other diets that just dont work for me they all want me to eat lots more then i can.
my health has felt so much better on this diet too so far.
ive lost 6 kgs and have sort of stalled abit this week going up and down grams but that was cause i stopped doing exicize one walking machine because i fell over the whippersnipper that one of my kids left in the hallway (at5am in the morning) and have cut all my under toes and foot, its a mess and im gunna be resting a while till it heals, (mind u the kids keep either dropping things on my foot or kicking it coming anywhere near me lol. even a checkout lady who was talking about my foot gave me a bag that broke and fell everything onto my foot.
she nearily died as i did lol with pain) so its gunna be a slow heal
