Default Uphill can be fun....

Hello there!

I thought it was finally time to get some "support", since I preach it's virtues to my patients all the time!

I am 28, Licensed Practical Nurse, mom to an 8 year old daughter with Asperger's. I work days, go to school nights, and managed to pile up a bunch of extra weight over a decade of ignoring and refusing to do the things I needed to do to manage my health

I have had PCOS since I was 13, and managed to develop Type 2 diabetes when I was 26, due to a bad habit of freebasing sugar in any form I could find it in. I was the carb queen! I could go days eating only starchy carbs - no produce or proteins.

I have done several commercial weight loss programs over the years, and none really worked. I was particularly fond of WW, since I could stay within my required points and eat nothing but those little sugar-fille WW cakes they sell at the store. However, you can only ignore your health so long before it sneaks up and WHAP!! you're in trouble.

About a year ago, I started working nights, and managed to lose some weight due to...never eating. Bad idea. Once I went back to working days, the weight came back. Gack.

I finally got serious about eating right this last tuesday. My nursing training tells me that diabetes + carbs = epic fail....and yet I was rationalizing and denying and doing all kinds of other unhealthy things. Time to get rolling. I have lost 10 lbs since tuesday, eating lots of healthy protein, no more than 2 oz cheese and 18-20g net carb non-starchy veggies per day. And lots of water!

I look forward to getting to know you all on this journey!

Hi, Sylvynne

Thanks for sharing your story. Holy cow, you stay so busy! Your schedule wears me out, just reading about it.

Congrats on your success so far! Have you read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution yet? That is the book that this board is centered around. The Atkins WOE (way of eating) is not a high protein diet, but rather, a moderate protein one. Healthy fats (we avoid trans fats) are key to making the plan work. Too much protein converts to glucose, and that's not what we want. I just wanted to make sure that you're getting some fat in, because you didn't mention it in your post. Of course, we haven't seen your menu, so perhaps you are getting adequate fat. It's not hard at all to incorporate fat into your meal plans.

Knowledge is power! Soak in as much information from the book and this board as you can. I still re-read the book every now and then, to stay on top of my game. Best wishes to you!

Hi just wanted to say hello as I have a 13 year old son with Aspergers and I know how it can be when you are trying to do your best for them as well as do something that is best for yourself.

Good Luck
