Smile Hi Everybody - On Atkins Again!

I have been overweight most of my life. At 16, I weighed 255 lbs. I kicked it in gear and by my 18th birthday I weighed 165 lbs. Then from age 18 to 26 I ballooned up to a whopping 298 lbs. At that time I discovered atkins. I went from 298lbs. to 199 lbs. by my 30th birthday. I felt great and was well on my way to a healthier life. I then discovered I was pregnant. I went very quickly from 199 to 285 lbs. when I had my son in the hospital. I was so discouraged and depressed. This last January I decided it was time to start again. I went from 265 to currently weighing in at 243 lbs. with a goal weight of 155 lbs. 10 lbs. less than what I weighed in high school!

I am hoping by subscribing to this forum that I will be able to stick with it and finally reach my goal. I have thought about weight loss surgery but my insurance doesn't cover it and I do not want anything permanent.

So here I go again! If you have any easy recipes you would like to share I would certainly appreciate it. I am a very busy mom with 2 careers, so I am always looking for quick easy recipes that the whole family can enjoy.

Hello there!

I, too, am hoping that this board will help me stick with it this time. My heaviest was about 250, and I lost 92 pounds in one year on Atkins and got down to 158. That's even less than high school for me! (I'm 33 now, with 2 kids) That was around 3 years ago. Since then I have had a lot of physical and personal issues that have caused me to gain most of it back. I am VERY unconfortable and embarrassed. I'm even scared to step on a scale because I'm worried I might weigh even MORE than before!

Well, maybe this time it will work out for us. Hang in there, and good luck!

-Jodie

Thumbs up Re: Hi Everybody - On Atkins Again!

Jodie,

I know exactly how you feel. I hadn't weighed myself in over 6 years. I was too scared to step on the scale but once I did, I realized that no matter what the number was, I was on a mission to feel better about myself. I too, deal with emotional and physical issues and it is hard. I decided to put myself first and even a 5 lb. weight loss made me feel better.

So don't be afraid of the scale, remember it is just a number and no matter what that scale says you can do it!

Wow, it's great to get such quick responses!

Thanks so much for your encouraging words.

One of the hardest things for me to deal with is knowing I can do this, I did it so easily before, but now I have some roadblocks. The biggest problem is living with a new husband who DOES NOT agree with low carb diets. I met him at my lowest weight, and gained most of it back over the 3 years we've been together. (He has nerve complaining--he weighs 300 lbs himself!) The other thing is no matter what everyone says, I do NOT think it is cheap to buy low carb foods. My family is on a VERY limited budget (as in, trying to avoid foreclosure). It is very difficult to buy fresh foods and not end up wasting them. And I am on the go so much, I need easy foods I can just grab and go. None of that stuff is low carb except, what, a hard boiled egg? LOL

Thanks again!

Wow, are situations are so similar! Except my new husband is very tall and weighs 165 lbs. soaking wet! We also have been married 3 years, infact today is our anniversary.

He is ok with Atkins, he just wants me to take off weight. I met him somewhere in the middle of my weight loss. His problem is, is that he doesn't understand what it is like to be overweight. He thinks that all overweight people have bad eating habits, are lazy and don't exercise. Which of course isn't true for everyone. He does try to help but it isn't the right kind of help. It is the help that just makes me feel worse about myself. So my answer to him, is that I am doing this for myself for health reasons.

As far as the cost goes, I can also relate. It is expensive to eat healthy. I printed out the Atkins induction list and took it along to the Dollar store with me. I like pork rinds and buy big bags of them for a buck. I use them for a lot of things, snacking, I crush and use them to cover meats and mix them with melted butter/splenda and cinnamon for a snack dessert. Another idea is to search the atkins induction recipes and plan for 7 day meals. I then shop only for those items(I only buy on sale) and make all my meals (separate from my families) on 1 designated day during the week. I either freeze or keep them in the fridge. Then I can easily grab and go. I like doing this because it saves time, money and it also helps me watch portion control. I hope so of this helps you!

Those tips certainly helped me, so thanks for that!

I don't know what your eating habits are, but I have already saved $20 this week by bringing my lunch as opposed to eating out so maybe if you can cut back or cut out the meals "out" then you can offset some of the expense of buying more meat, cheese, and produce at the grocery store.

Welcome to ADBB -- glad you are back and ready to make it to your goal!! This is a great place for support!!

We follow the 2002 DANDR book here -- the best thing you can do is read it and find out why and how the plan works -- it's a life commitment, not a diet you are on a couple months and go off (but you know that!!)

Here are some recipe sites that will help make your meals much better. There is no reason to eat the same things over and over - there is such variety on this WOE. Make sure you are only eating induction friendly recipes to begin with -- and you are eating only foods on the acceptable foods list - if it's not the on the list it doesn't belong in your mouth! Drink at least 64 ounces of water everyday and do some form of exercise everyday. You'll start seeing great changes in yourself within days!!

We also have lots of challenges you can join to keep yourself accountable and where you'll meet lots of people who are in the same boat you are.

Good luck on your journey.
