Texas Mama is on a distinguished road
Unhappy Depressed, desperate and new to atkins

Well I am a 42 year old mother of two. I have been married to a wonderful man for 16 years. I am 5'3" tall and 205lbs. I am so sick of being overweight and feeling disgusted with myself. I have tried every diet and exercise program all with little to no great result. I have been on Jenny Craig, and Weight Watchers and more......it kills me to look in the mirror. I hate feeling to GROSS all the time. I avoid buying new clothes b/c nothing fits well. I want to look and feel attractive and right now I could just cry. Its made me so depressed in the last few years since my son was born in 2002. I NEED help desperately. I hope Atkins can help me lose the weight so I can get off my blood pressure meds and depression medicine. Thanks for listening........

Hi Texas Mama, I am new too. Aren't the depression pills supposed to stop the depression? I have heard that some anti-depressents can prevent weight loss. I am taking anti-depressents too, welbutrin. You really should discuss your medication with your doctor if you are still feeling blue. The ones I take help with weight loss because they are also for people that quit smoking and it helps keep the weight off after that.

I felt really gross too, luckily my husband likes women with a little more meat so he still made me feel attractive to him but it doesn't change how I feel about how I look.

Try the diet, it will work and if you add garlic in some of the meals, it should help lower your blood pressure. I found a couple of the Dr. Adkins books at the dollar store, one about the diet and one his wife wrote that is recipes. It was the best $2 I ever spent.

I was really surprised at how satisfying the diet it, I plan to eat like this for life. I think the first 3 days are the hardest and moodiest, but I don't even crave anything now and I have been on it for a week.

Good luck, take a look at some of the before and after pics, you will feel better knowing that, that will be you soon.

At your height you are likely close in size to what I was at 250 or so. Are you wearing an 18 or 20? (I am a bit taller.) I ask to motivate you... that is what I wore just a few months ago.. even a 22 in some things.

Being too big to want to shop for clothes is the pits! I 100 percent know what you are saying.

Okay you got your book? You Atkins book? Read and read some more. This stuff really works, but it helps if you understand why and that is in the book. Two things a depressed person frequently needs, exercise (always) and B vitamins, (nearly always.) Take my word for this as a formerly depressed person! A good complex B vitamin can almost always improve the outlook.

The reason is simple.. you have a covering on your nerve fibers. It is called a 'myelin sheath.' Eating the wrong foods like sugar, actually depletes our bodies of B vitamins, and they are vital to the integrity of that 'sheath' around your nerves. Ever feel like your nerves are just shredded, frazzed, worn out? Well basically they are! G good dose of B complex vitamins will help repair that vital covering and get you feeling better. Get Super B complex or some other Hi Potency formula, you can get this in many brands. Not expensive and really worth it.

Exercise is the best antidepressant ever. I know it is hard to get started, but as simple as a walk. Even better, find a pool!

Other than that, the diet will also get you going. It is wonderful for stable blood sugars and for lowering blood pressure. You will actually remember what energy feels like when you are doing Atkins! Stick out the first hard few days and a new world awaits, I promise!

OH and I am a Texas Grandma!

Thanks so much for your powerful words of encouragement. I have not bought the book yet. I understand i am not looking to buy the newest verison of the Atkins Diet, correct? I will definitely go and look for the Super B Vitamin Complex. I truly want to be completely off all my meds and feel good about myself. The hard part for me is that not only am I disgusted with my appearance, my husband is not to happy about it either. Its like I feel guilty and he always says something about what I eat and/or how much I eat. That's no way to live. He loves me but wants me to lose weight. The reality is I truly want to lose weight more than anything even long before my husband said anything.

You will be looking for the 2002 version, and there is no newer version. There are later books, Atkins for Life is one, but there is no more current book for basically doing 'Atkins'.

Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution is the title.

This is the most 'doable' way to revamp your eating and get your body to cooperate with you in losing weight.

While you go look for the book, also commit to something, even if it is just one circuit around the block, get moving! You'll thank me! hugs

Hi Texas Mama,

Is your husband supporting you in your Atkins journey? Mine was very sceptical at first when he saw me eating very rich foods - that soon changed when he saw the pounds shifting. So...if he gets a bit grumpy and picky in the first few days, do your best to ignore it.

My old man has a few pounds of his own to shift - so now he has joined me and is a complete convert as his pot belly is starting to go.

hey Ronnie -- when I started Atkins in January I huffed & puffed my way to the corner, came home and took a nap....that was January -- now I walk several miles at a time and ride a stationary bike every other day either 15 or 20 miles at a time....the exercise will help with your depression and will also tone your body faster than sitting around only eating healthy food and expecting to have taught skin when you are at your goal. I'm not bragging, I'm just telling you that if an overweight 51 year old woman who loved sitting can do this you can to!!

Make sure you are drinking AT LEAST 64 ounces of water a day -- more is better but at least that much. This is pure water, not tea, coffee, kool-aid none of that counts toward your water intake.

Here are some links to help you get started -- rules of induction, acceptable food list (if it's not on this list you don't put it in your mouth!) and links to several recipe sites so you won't get bored eating the same thing over and over. Make sure you are only using induction recipes to begin with. Good luck. If you need anything - just ask!
