toastiebear is on a distinguished road
Default Hi there.

Hello! I'm going to be starting Atkins soon, and found this website! Looks like an awesome community to me. I am 21 years old, and have PCOS and Diabetes type 2. I went from 176 to 250 pounds in about a year. Thats when I found out about the PCOS , and six months later, diabetes. I am now on Metformin, and I see slight changes. Less mood swings, anyway! I really want to lose weight, I feel like a skinny person stuck in a big body. I want to be healthy again. I have so many medical issues that can be silenced by weight loss. I guess this all struck me about a week ago when my bf proposed..with a size 8 ring. I wear a 12, and its an eternity band. So, even if they can size it, its going to cost..almost as much as the ring. At least out here. I don't want to lose weight to be able to wear my ring, but that would be a bonus.

Enough about that.

I have a few questions...

I would really like to know of any cheap/easy meals that will fill me up during induction. I do not want to fail at this. I have to keep my blood sugar stable, which is...believe it or not....much easier when I don't have hunger pains :P.

I don't have a ton of money to blow (who does), Either way, I am determined to do this the right way. I've been researching online the past few days and I haven't turned up much on induction..meals. I REALLY want to do this right, so if anyone has any ideas/tips, that would be wonderful. I am really looking forward to being a part of this site, and Atkins overall. Yay!

Default Re: Hi there.

On induction I ate somewhat simple food - lots of meats, fish and veggies.

But Linda's page is very handy. Check out the recipe section on this board and here are some threads you may like to have a look at:

Default Re: Hi there.

Chicken is relatively inexpensive and a good meat to have -- it doesn't matter which part of the chicken, thighs and legs are usually less expensive than breast meat. Pork Chops, Hamburger, minute steak....I'd go to the store where you can find the best meat deals and get a couple packages of inexpensive meats.

As far as fresh veggies - buy lettuce (head lettuce or whatever type you like best), celery, green peppers, radishes, green onion - check the veggie list for which ones you like best but make sure you get a variety.

I see you live in Burlington, WI -- there are several Aldi stores there, they have 8oz Happy Harvest Sharp Cheddar cheese blocks for $1.89 - grate it up or slice it in 1oz servings it will last you quite awhile. They also have a dozen eggs for .89 (these are the prices in St. Louis, MO hopefully close or the same where you are). You can get chicken, hamburger, pork chops, pork tenderloin and save quite a bit of money - I shop there alot!

Here are a few other things to help you get started:

*Before you start take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of induction - there are too many variables daily and hourly that can cause your weight to change, so weighing at the end of induction is what Dr. Atkins suggested.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added ***– see below for more info).
*Take your supplements and exercise
*Stay away from the shakes and bars (they aren’t legal on induction) and any processed or chemically enhanced foods – we eat whole foods.

Check the stickies (information posts) at the top of this page – it’s a condensed version of the DANDR book. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
Filtered water
Mineral water
Spring water
Tap water

*** Crystal Lite, sugar free teas, sugar free kool-aid & diet sodas do not count they are chemically enhanced and most include aspartame (also not allowed on Atkins) – PURE water is the only thing that counts toward your daily water intake. If you need a “flavor” in your water float a lemon or lime slice on top of your water

The recipe sites are a helpful way to make your meals more enjoyable – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.
