Smile Trying the Atkins Approach to Health :)

Hello everyone! This is my first post and I'm looking around on this very informative site.

I'm not new to dieting and have tried many plans over the years. Most recently I have been following South Beach and while I like that program very much, the carbs are still too much for me. Carbs are a HUGE problem for me and even with following SBD, my triglycerides are still way too high.

I am planning to start Atkins soon and see how that works for me. I seem to feel my best and lose weight more consistently when I eliminate most starches & grains.

My style of eating is pretty much whole foods meaning that I don't do prepared/packaged things and prepare meals from real ingredients. I try to buy local and use fresh, organic veggies as much as I can as well as grass-fed beef/bison, free-range chickens who produce nice fresh eggs from a local farm, freshly caught sustainable fish & seafood, etc. No fake stuff or artificial sweeteners/ingredients. From what I've been able to research so far, Atkins can fit nicely with my lifestyle.

I plan to start Induction soon. I'm using this time to read & research what I need to know and also to clear out my kitchen of non-plan items.

I do have concerns about the high fat and cholesterol as well as how ketosis will react with my body. I do have some bladder health issues and will work closely with my doctors to monitor and reactions.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to getting to know many of you better!

Hi welcome to the board! It sounds like you are ready to go...do you have a copy of DANDR 2002 (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 ed)? That's the version of Atkins we do here on this board. It can be really confusing trying to piece together the rules from different internet sites, as different sites go by different versions of the diet. Check out the stickies at the top of the Forums - they outline the rules Best wishes,

Hi and welcome: Any questions or concerns you have please post and let us help you. Here is some information to help get you started:

Before you start:
*take your measurements and get on the scale so you have accurate numbers to start with - don't weigh again until the end of your 2 week induction.
*Eat a variety of meats, cheeses and vegetables. Also make sure you get your fats, carbs and protein in daily – www.fitday.com will help you keep track of this.
*Drink 64 ounces of pure water -nothing added daily (Legal water is considered Filtered water, Mineral water, Spring water and Tap water).
*Take your supplements and start an exercise routine today.

The Atkins shakes and bars are not legal on induction – there are non-induction ingredients in them and they are not listed on the acceptable food list. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list it doesn’t belong in your mouth – no exceptions!

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Welcome to the board Mizski!

I tried South Beach once but didn't really care for it. I think it was because I had done Atkins before and SB allowed foods that I had stopped eating and didn't want to start again. Anyway, I think you'll find Atkins to be the one you can live with. Good luck!

Hi Mizski, Welcome to ADBB. It's wise of you to get a handle on things before you begin. Also the clearing out of the kitchen helps prevent missteps later. I think Atkins is more "cut and dried" so it is easier for lazy planners like myself. Looking forward to seeing you post when you finally take that first step. Jill
