Default Hello!

Hello all , I've been looking at the forum for a while and taken in as much info as I can, I was once very sceptical about Atkins because it went against the grain of much of what I (thought) I knew about nutrition. Then I saw this ( Why we gain weight: Adiposity 101 and the Alternative Hypothesis of Obesity ) short film of a lecture by Gary Taubes, you may have heard of him, once I saw this I thought that 'that Atkins guy may have been right after all'. This film made me re-evaluate my understanding of nutrition and I read Dr Atkins book...then I felt I didnt have an option except to test this for myself. I needed to loose quite a bit of weight and I had done quite well by simply reducing fat and increasing exercise but my rate of loss slowed down after a couple of months.

I am now at the end of the fourth day of induction. I have felt very tired and I have had a mild but persistent headache for the first three days. This might be caffeine withdrawal. I am following the diet very strictly and I was a bit worried when I did not get a positive ketosis result at the end of day three. I wondered if I had not eaten enough fat, I had certainly not eaten any carbs. Thankfully I tested positive this afternoon and I am looking forward to seeing how I feel over the next few days, the headache seems to be subsiding now, and I feel a bit more energetic. The advice and support offered on thsi forum has been encouraging even when viewed as an unregistered member.

Default Re: Hello!

You should be eating carbs....which edition of Dr Atkins books are you reading? Day 3 isn't the magical day everyone goes into keotsis -- it varies from person to person. Pain relievers can be used to get rid of the headaches

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (If you are NEW, READ THIS!)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/spotlight-introduce-yourself/60133-if-you-new-read.html

Make a copy of this list: (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Make sure you don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”). We count "net carbs" (carb minus fiber = net carbs) – you can keep track of your daily food on FitDay or another program.

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Hello Yanto. Cheer up you should be feeling better soon! Atkins challenged all the conventional "wisdom" of his day and as time passes more and more of what he theorized happens with our weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc seems to be proven to be true. Seems like the medical community is always the worst skeptics in evaluating their own.

Default Re: Hello!

Thank you both for your words of support. Today (Day five) I feel much, much better, still have a bit of headache but much less so and I don't feel anywhere near as tired, in fact about normal if not better than a pre-atkins Friday.
Carole, thanks for the links. I have been reading the DANDR 2003 (UK Edition). I made an error saying I had not been eating carbs, what I meant was I have not eaten any refined sugars, starches or any fruit. I have been eating my (allowed) veg! I have stuck fairly rigidly to the list of banned and allowed foods and I have avoided processed stuff altogether. I am perhaps eating everything in slightly larger quantities than others because I have a very active lifestyle, and he says you should eat if you are hungry. Saying that my appetite has diminished today.

Take a couple pain releavers if you need to and get over the headache -- it means you are getting into keotsis -- thats a good thing!!
