I was a vegetarian until yesterday. I went to the doc yesterday and it turns out I have all kinds of deficiencies from a combination of bad life long eating habits (I had tried going vegetarian to counteract that but I was already too far behind on essentials when I started that 8 months ago), too much stress and confused about the multitude of health information that's out there now. A lot of that goes to explain why I eat about half what normal people do and still gain or stay the same, I even tried going to the gym religiously 3 times a week for 3 months and saw no improvement. I've been on a journey to health for over 2 years now with only small advances. This new doc is determined to make it happen for me though and starting this diet was his first recommendation. Today and tomorrow I'm trying to eat all the fruit in the house and dropping off the salt water taffy at a coworkers desk to get it out of my pantry. I'm also reading up on everything and I started having a bit of meat today, pork in my spring rolls at lunch and a beef vegetable soup for dinner. I plan on putting together a shopping list for the next two weeks and hitting the grocery store tomorrow so I'm ready for Saturday's start.

Welcome! Sounds like you've really been on a roller coaster. It's great having support from your doctor, there's not a lot of us out there who do. Also sounds like you're mentally prepped for the change in lifestyle.

Good luck on your journey. This is an excellent place for tips, tricks and most of all, support.

Suzanne

Hi and welcome to ADBB.

I hope this will help answer some questions you may have. We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (If you are NEW, READ THIS!)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/spotlight-introduce-yourself/60133-if-you-new-read.html

Make a copy of this list: (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store

If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Make sure you don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”). We count "net carbs" (carb minus fiber = net carbs) – you can keep track of your daily food on FitDay or another program.

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Welcome. Go easy with small protein portions today. Its a big change to the digestive tract if you haven't been eating meat for awhile. Also stock up on psyllium husks either in powder or capsule form. You will be needing the extra fiber. You can also use flax seed to help out there. READ the book thoroughly and take in what it says. Can't stress enough how important this is.

Thanks for the support I have the book and it's been my bedtime reading for the last 2 days, hoping to stay awake long enough to get through at least until the end of the first phase tonight (part of my problem is fatigue, even with at least 7 hours, my eyes are bloodshot every morning) Just had some AMAZING ratatouille that I think could fit into the induction rules that I'll try. Had some chicken today, beef vegetable soup yesterday, so far not reacting too badly. I'll definitely get the psyllium husks, I have one of those fiber supplements but of course there's sugar in it so that's a no! I think I'll miss pasta the most though! I LOVE kamut pasta with some marinara, maybe I can get it in the later stages, it's a high protein grain. Nothings too hard for only two weeks though! Also started going back to hot yoga to help out with the fitness requirements. Man I'm blabby, sorry! It's nice to be somewhere where people don't look at me like I'm insane that I'm doing this, to some it's easier saying it's a cleanse
