Default The real start

I am coming back on here again to re-introduce myself. But first I will give a little background.

I have tried to do Atkins over the years, and each time I failed. I tried again on January 1 of this year. I have lost 24 lbs since then, but since I didn’t follow Atkins more than two days in a row, I didn’t do it from Atkins. I can’t describe how sick and tired and demoralized I have been feeling. I try to start Atkins and then something always pushes me back, mostly my own lack of willpower.

Last night I started to think real hard about how I am killing myself by eating this way. I was thinking how I always feel lousy. I started to think how lucky I have been when I felt I had real health problems because of my weight and was worried and scared and how relieved I felt when I found it everything was OK. I remember vowing all those times to change my ways and then I didn’t.

Then I thought about all the things I have put off in my life because of my weight, all the lost opportunities. When I was younger I always thought I had plenty of time. Then 20 came, then 25, 29, 30, 32 and in six months I will 35. I started to feel horrible thinking that 35 was so close and I had only gotten fatter. Life is passing me by. And now I will find out this week if I am going to be laid-off. How am I going to find a job at 321lbs in this job market?

So last night I decided to look at it with a fresh set of eyes. Forget the past; forget the failures and disappointment, start anew. Since 2001 I have worn a beard to cover my double chins and try to look thinner. I really just look like a fat guy with a beard and messed-up thick long hair. So I shaved the beard off and cut my hair. I am going back to the gym and getting started working out again. I also reread “The Book.”

So here I go. I do not consider this a re-start since I never really did Atkins right in the first place. So tommorrow is my start date. I will be back on here two weeks from tommorrow, on August 26 to post my induction results.

Thanks

Welcome -- Congratulations for making some tough decisions and changing things starting this morning. You may know the plan from your past but you said you are looking at it with "fresh eyes" -- so here is what I tell newbies!

First of all, you are in a great place today -- you have found a wonderful support system here but we can't make you follow the plan or eat the correct foods, that is your job - we will support you every step out of the way, pick you up when you need it, give you a good talking to when you need that, and congratulate you everyday!

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. I hope this is the copy you have and are reading. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make a copy of this list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Do you think you could manage to check in each day? I know it sounds silly, but it really does help when you have a support system. We all need someplace to vent when things get to be too much...as well as a place where folks can kick our butts on a regular basis. Have you checked out the blog feature? Keeping tabs on how you feel...even if it's one word, it really does help.

Good luck and I hope to see you around the Century board...there are some cool cats in there.
