Hi and welcome to ADBB grits.

We follow the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) it would be a helpful for you to have a copy of the book to refer to. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

If you follow the plan the way it was written, drink a minimum of 64 ounces of PURE water daily, exercise daily and take vitamin supplements you will start seeing success in no time. When your friends are eating cookies and pizza eat something legal for you -- look at the recipe site links below to help keep your menus from getting boring. Once your body goes into keotsis you really won't have any cravings so you won't have to worry about what anyone else eats. Whatever you do remember to eat your vegetables - that is where most of your carbs come from and you need at least 1 cup of higher carb vegetables daily! (check the "other" list for these).

Make a copy of this list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Hi grits! Maybe you could work on changing your thinking from "I can't" to "I don't want to?" A lot of people have food allergies where they cannot eat certain foods. I'm sure many of them go out with their friends and have foods that they can eat.

Eating healthy takes some modicum of commitment and planning. Same for ANY diet plan you may follow. It is important to make up your mind what you are going to do and then follow through. Remember that there will always be food options that are not on your diet plan. I think it's more a matter of determination and commitment rather than willpower.

Re: surgery. WLS is not some instant fix for obesity. It is a way to force people to eat less and theoretically, they will lose weight. It is NOT a fun time however. You can only eat a tiny portion of specific foods. That means that you could either have a nice big steak with veggies and butter (on Atkins) OR a couple of bites of plain chicken with a couple plain green beans (after WLS). I vote for the nice steak dinner.

It's hard changing habits at first and it takes a little time and practice but you can still go out with your friends. And once you start see your weight go down, saying no to those cookies and such becomes easier and without angst. Good luck!
