Default Back to Atkins - 2nd and final time

Hello everyone!

I was one of those that fell in love with the Atkins WOE, successfully lost 47 lbs, gained energy, health and endurance...and hit a plateau. And began trying to "fix" it and ended up getting too many carbs and fell back into my sugar, corn syrup and white flour addictions. I got further away from Atkins the harder I tried to get off the plateau.

I allowed myself to fall back into the low-fat, "gotta eat lotsa carbs" mentality & gained it all back plus some (a familiar story!).

In 2006 I was diagnosed with stage 2 uterine cancer. After radical surgery, recovery and care, now three years later, I'm still cancer-free. After I recovered from surgery, my Dr. put me on Weight Watchers. I lost 50 lbs... and stalled for 18 months.

I was concerned and frustrated because my oncologist had told me every 10 lbs I lost increased the odds the cancer would not return. I learned fat holds estrogen, and since uterine cancer is an estrogen-based cancer, she explained I needed to eliminate all the excess estrogen in my 100+ lbs of excess weight.

After going on many diets to try to break the plateau, then back to WW--and still not losing more than a couple pounds here and there, instead gaining several more back--I finally came to my senses and came back to Atkins.

Sorry for the short book! I'm a writer and tend to write too much. If you made it all the way to the end, I want to say thanks, and it's good to have found this board! I look forward to reading everything!

Welcome back. Sounds like you need it. And yes it helps to be wiser.
We have a couple of "clubs" here you may want to check out. There is the Second Time Around Club (a forum) And the Century Club (a forum for those with more than 100 lb to lose) They have be of special help to you.
You have very good motivation there.
I did not know there was a Atkins twitter chat. Anybody particular "running" that? Glad you figured out what your problem was and that things are going better.

Hi and welcome back:

At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - (Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html. Make a copy of this list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html - take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

I was concerned and frustrated because my oncologist had told me every 10 lbs I lost increased the odds the cancer would not return. So here I am. More metabolically resistant than before, but also wiser. I've been on Induction, going on the 5th week, sticking to it to the letter. I'd lost 5 lbs the first week, the 2nd week lost a pound, and in the 3rd & 4th weeks gained 10 lbs! I was totally and completely befuddled, and realized from an Atkins Twitter chat that cream cheese might be a problem. I quit eating my daily 2-3 oz. and within three days I've dropped 6.5 lbs. I'm learning that I just might need to stay on Induction and avoid all cheeses until I can get my body in a healthy burning state.

Sorry for the short book! I'm a writer and tend to write too much. If you made it all the way to the end, I want to say thanks, and it's good to have found this board! I look forward to reading everything!
Smiling Writer,

You have so much to smile about...

You are already a SUCCESS in life. Congratulations on your recent recovery from cancer... that is awesome.

I know this second challenge will happen for you too. I would go back and read about cheese and candida in the Atkins book. So, you may still need to take probiotics to cure the candida. In a few months you will probably be able to handle the cheese. I am NOT a doctor, but, I went through a major illness and my immune system was compromised during and after. Candida was one of the things I needed to deal with to lose weight successfully. I still take probiotics for my health.

Of course, you should run everything by your doctors!

Hugs,

Hi liv, thank you for the great advice and support! I will check out those clubs ASAP The Twitter chat was held by AtkinsInsider ( Atkins Diet Online (AtkinsInsider) on Twitter ). They will be holding another one soon I believe. I don't know the name of the person who actually writes the tweets but they represent the Atkins Website and community.

Hi imagood1. Thanks for the great links and Induction suggestions! And I just love your "take me to your litre"! LOL!

Hi SweetCher - Thank you so much for the warm support and greeting! You are absolutely right, I do have a lot to smile about. It's funny you mention candida, because that is what motivated me to try Atkins back in 2003, and though it's not as obvious, you're right, after the health issues I've been through, I'm sure it's not gone or well-controlled anymore! I will look into the probiotics. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I appreciate the greeting and support from you all, and look forward to checking out all the fantastic information here!

Warm wishes,
