cali is on a distinguished road
Default New and working for Two!

My Mom and I are both concerned with our weight. I am especially worried about her as she has some health problems already. She is currently staying with me so that she can recover from knee surgery. What a great time for both of us to start Atkins together!
Problem, she doesn't like anything! I mention that she can't have coke. She cannot handle that. So, I am not sure that Atkins is for her. I don't want her to be miserable. I think all of the other things that you can eat will be ok. I am so ready to do something permanent and excited to have support.
I have several clients that have successfully lost weight with Atkins.
My Mom is a southern girl. Any suggestions as to how to get her through the induction painlessly? What can I give her to drink?
She wants us to try the newest fad. I am tired and ready to lose!

Welcome to the Atkins Board.

I hope you’ve read the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR), it’s the book we follow on this bulletin board. If you haven’t until you can get a copy you’ll find a condensed version at the top of the induction -
(Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)(Atkins Diet Induction FAQs)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html. Within a few days your bodies will go into keotsis and hopefully your mother won't feel she can't live without sweets -- stopping eating anything sweet from day 1 is the key to controlling that sweet tooth.

As far as following the "newest fad" --- unfortunately it may work for a short while but most "fads" don't last because they aren't long term changes in your daily life. Atkins is a high fat, moderate protein which help keep you feeling full longer. You will have more energy within a few days and you'll start feeling much better than you have in a long time. What can mom have to drink....no caffeine, the shakes aren't induction friendly (regardless of what the packaging says) --- water.....pure water is what is recommended. I get up in the morning, have a cup of decaf with cream then start drinking water until I've drank my water for the day...it may sound terrible to begin with, but if you drink pure water you'll flush the toxins and nasties out of your system which also helps you feel better - and after a few days your body will demand you drink more water than anything else.

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and taking a multi-vitamin. Check all around the board for everything there is to, there is a challenge section with both exercise and non exercise challenges, Rate My Menu for help with your food, journaling – there is something for everyone

Make a copy of this list (What foods can be eaten on Induction?)(What foods can be eaten on Induction?)http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

If you don't feel your mom will do well on Atkins there is no reason you can't follow the plan -- I make meals for my husband and mother everyday, they aren't on the plan but we start with the same meat then I make different things for them...they do like a few meals I eat so we do eat the same things occasionally, but not every day. If you need anything we’re here to help you!! Good luck to you!

The best way to do Atkins is to give up the soda all together...but if she can't do that maybe she can wean herself off like others do with coffee. Maybe mix it with water...or find the diet sodas that are sweetened with Spenda and slowly weaning off of those. Getting everything else in line will start her on the path to a healthy life and when she can give up the soda (set a deadline in advance) then she can do another two weeks of Induction clean.

Good luck!

DietRite soda use to have splenda in it. They have both the caffinated and the uncaffinated kinds I think. So heres what to expect, induction then maybe nothing for a week or two while your body is trying to figure out what is happening to it. So don't freakout about post induction stall for a week or two if you experiance it. I'd say let her try it with her diet sodas and see if she still looses before you try to talk her out of them all together. My ex never would have done it for a day if it ment no soda. I do it cheap. Hamburgers with a slice of cheese on top, baked chicken breast, baked legquarters, slow cooked Botton Butts and picnics. Also see about throwing cucumbers in for salad veggies if she ain't into lettuce with ranch dressing. Frenchstyle greenbeans, broccoli and cheese, asperagus for my other veggies. Check the food list for anything else she might like. I cook with onions, bell peppers, celery and mushrooms too but you need to know which list they are in and becareful on daily totals. I have tried it without my coffee and with my coffee, and it doesn't affect me. But if I have something sweet, I follow it with something sweeter so I don't use the splenda. My mom opts for portion control, excercise and very slow weightloss.

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.
