What are Referrals?

I'm looking at my CP and it shows "referrals".

Is there a code I give to others? A link? I went to vBulletin but wasn't sure how the referrals worked, technically.

The way it's worked on other forums I've been on is that when someone registers, they are asked if they were referred by anyone. They can enter in the email address or user name of a member of the forum.

But, I could be wrong..... There's a first time for everything. Haha
