Default Thyroid Problems

I recently went to the doctor and had my thyroid checked. He has refered me to an endocronologist. My level recorded was 4.7. Does anyone know what that means or what this other doctor is going to do?

I have been checked before and my thyroid was fine. My weight loss has slowed down for about the last 6 months so I am wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Does anyone have any info about this? ensive

I believe the higher the number is, it means your thyroid is underactive ... Did the doctor prescribe meds for you?

I've been at both ends of the thyroid issue; first with hyperthyroidism which led me to have a sub-total thyroidectomy which put me into hypothyroidism for life. I've been on thyroid replacement meds ever since.

I've had to have my dosages adjusted a few times since losing my weight, so yes, the thyroid (or lack of it) can and will affect your weight loss.

Surely your endocrinologist explained your results to you, didn't he?

well since you didn't give us enough info to even know if was your THS or not it will be hard to tell you anything.

In 2002 the endocrine society lowered the threshhold for folk to TSH above 3.0 if they were symptomatic and stoppage of weight loss while dieting is symptomaic allong with lots of other things.

Your endocrinologist will runs a complete panel and see if your have enough free T4 and T# or you need thyroid hormones.

Many of the foods eatten during induction and OWL have goitrogenic properties that is they can interfer with the movements and conversions of the inactive to the active form of your thyroid hoemone. Then there are other chemivcals in the body that can interfer too.

Happy low carbing.

Default TSH

I just got my results from the test in the mail and it was the TSH that was tested and the level was 4.70.

I go to the endocranologist tomorrow- so we will see what he says.
:nod

If my thyroid is underactive- with medication, should this help me loose weight???

yep every cell in your body needs thyroid meds to metabolize correctly so think of yourself as a 45 record running on 33.3333 instead of 45 RPMs you can be heard but you seem to be slow motion and dragging. Hyper folk are running at 78 :yikes

Okay, I just had a physical last week.. First time I have ever gotten my thyroid checked.. My TSH was 5.62. My doctor wants to start me on Synthroid.. What I was wondering is, how many folks are being treated by there family practice MD as opposed to seeing an endocrinologist? I kinda thought they would refer me, so I would have a full thyroid panel.

your doc can do a full panel if you need it.

He is starting you on a standard dose and will recheck you in 6 wks to see if you are responding and if that is the correct dose.

If your lewvel comes down and is in the normal range and your symptoms go away then that is all you need for the rest of your life you will beed a one a yr testing.

Are you on any estrogen? if so make sure your doc knows as theis will effect the amount of the fre T$ in your system.

Nope, no estrogen.. I have never taken any kind of meds before.. Just found out today, when I called to get my results. I was told that they were just slightly elevated. (she said norm was .35-5.5). But I have been researching that your levels should really be below that. I never considered that my thyroid was underactive.. I just had some "routine" blood work done. Now, I am wondering how long I have had this problem??

on the good side once your thyroid level is back to normal you will see your weight loss moving even better.

The endocrine society lowered the threshold level to 3.0 in 2002 but many labs still use the old range as their standards.

Thanks.. I wonder if this is why I have noticed my hair thinning so much in the last 15 months? I had attributed it to the weight loss, but now I am not sure. In the summer, I have to wear a hat to keep my head from getting sunburned :no
