Default Hypothyroid/Anemia Question...

Ok. I've been on Synthroid for 9 years. I am hypothyroid. When I lose weight, I do need to adjust my medicine levels, which is great. I just had my 3rd child in November and they've been monitoring my thyroid as well as my blood count for anemia since November. I've been extremely anemic since I gave birth. So, they put me on iron several time a day. Last week, I just had my blood drawn again and my thyroid is FINALLY regulated with in levels BUT, I'm still extremely anemic. SO, they're sending me to a hematologist to see what is going on. The funny thing is, I'm still having lots of 'thyroid like' problems. My hair is still coming out (I have a lot of hair it just comes out in handfuls), my nails are brittle, I have no energy.
Has anyone else experienced severe anemia while having a thyroid condition? I have an appt. next week with the new dr. so we'll see what's going on. But, I was just wondering if this is a 'normal' type thing or what. I have to do some more research but I thought I'd check here as well. Thanks so much for your help.

OH my Gosh you sound like me. I am on Synthyroid Just after I had my second Child and Anemic as well. I also have something called Pernicious Anemia this is a low level of Vitamin B12 I guess it's common in Hypothyroidism.

I had the hair falling out and everything until they added Cytomel to my daily Meds it's the active form of Thyroid T3 and it works wonders you may want to ask your Doc about it. Also with you still being Anemic what are they doing for you??? Are you taking Iron shots there has to be a reason you are so anemic are they running tests on you??? Be sure to eat a lot of Iron rich foods to help your body recover and don't be too strenuous ijn exercise or you can cause heaqrt attack, Anemia is very serious if you don't look after it. I am glad you are getting help I sure hope that you can get everything figured out and start to feel better. I would definately ask about the T3 (cytomel) in changed my life

Thanks for the response. I'll make sure to question the doc. when I go. I just thought it was odd that my thyroid seemed to be within levels but I was still having the strange thyroid like symptons. Thanks again.

Default Re: Hypothyroid/Anemia Question...

your thyroid can be normal and the hair loss from the amenia. You can also be anemic from the pregancy and/or hypothyroid. if it is hypo thyroid caused you will recover as your thyroid levels return to normal and the cells making red blood cells recover from the low amount of thyroid hormone they were getting.

Pernicious Anemia is caused by the small intestine being unable to absorb B-12 from food because of loss of production of intrinsic factor not low thyroid. They can be related if a person has autoimune caused low thyroid better know as Hasimoto's that attack those cells too but not all hypothyroid folk have pericous amenia.

My hair falls out in globs if I don't have T3 (cytomel or armour) with the T4 (synthroid). I have no energy, brain fog, etc. My Dr. tests my free T4, free T3 and TSH because I have Hashis and my body doesn't convert T4 into T3 very well. My Mom switched to Armour thyroid a few months ago after 30 years on Synthroid. The T3 in it has made a huge difference in her energy levels and brain fog.

yep being hypo covers a multitude of reasons why your thyroid is low and your doc has to figure out where your issues are. if you don't have conversion issues then taking T3 will make you hyperthyroid so please anybody reading this make sure your doc does a complete thyroid panel when you are getting tested.
