Hi, biogeek! ... need to bounce something off you; I posted this on another thread, but this is a nutritional question, so I'm reposting it here: Starting doing circuit training this week, but on Friday my husband noticed big bruises on the back of my thighs. I'm sure part of it is because I exercise with LOTS of enthusiasm , but I'm also wondering if it has to do with the amount of fish oil I'm taking? I've read that it can thin your blood, like taking aspirin does. (And, Sherri, I promise not to bounce off the equipment anymore!)

I hasten to add I'm taking it on doctor's orders (he said up to 4,000-5,000 mg. a day) because I have familial hypercholesterolemia and need to get my HDL numbers up (I'm on a statin, also). Going to pick up some quercetin and bromelain at the health food store tomorrow (to strengthen the capillaries) plus some arnica gel to reduce the existing bruises.

Any suggestions or info you have would be most welcome

From my readings, it takes awhile before the fish oil will do that i.e. taking over 7500 mg for months before you'll start bruising with ease, but you know, we're all a bit different, too, in how supplements affect us. On a personal note, I have caused myself to bruise when lifting weights from lifting too much using quick movements. A friend of mine has done something similar. Maybe we're all a bit enthusiastic with our lifts? However, you should keep a note of it and see if it repeats and follows a pattern. You can also ask your doctor about it as well. Glad you're doing something about your low HDLs.

Thanks for the input, biogeek I've got a lipid profile coming up Oct. 31 and a follow-up a week later, so if this persists, I'll definitely ask him about it. Appreciate the feedback!

Hi. I would like to join the club too. I recently discovered I had a vitamin B deficiency and have started taking more to keep my energy levels up but sometimes I forget to take them so that little 'vitamin guy' in my siggy will certainly help me remember.

Sherri, you said that flaxseed is good for the heart and it probably is normally but when my dh bought some of the flaxseed meal after having heart surgery, the package said that people on blood thinners shouldn't eat it. So maybe Norm should check with his doctor first before spending any money on it?

Welcome BB lady! Hope you remember to take your B vitamins! They're so good for you. As far as your hubby consuming flax, it would be best for Norm to contact his physician. Hopefully, he'll get the green light, but who knows what the doc will say.

Glad to have you with us!

cindy, you can list what you take each day if you want or if you have questions. bio usually likes to check out our stash of pills. LOL
it also lets the rest of us see if there might be something we should be taking, a sort of comparing notes. just post away in the conversation thread.

ps. i'm glad somebody joined because it bumped the thread and reminded me to take my supplements today. i have the worst trouble with this lately.

Thank you, jimmie. You're so awesome and very helpful! No kidding about remembering...uh-h-h what are we talking about. Oh no! I forgot! LOL Just kidding!

I've been able to post on the conversation thread every day, then I started doing it every other day except weekends. So I try to post Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but not weekends. I'm very busy with church, school, homework, (my own) exercise challenges (it varies weekend to weekend), relationships and life.

See you on the other threads. Thanks a whole bunch!
