Default L-Carnitine and Chromium Picolinate

I am surprised that so few people in this forum are taking these supplements and that the Moderator doesn't recommend them. I don't have my DANDR with me at the moment, but specifically recall reading that these are recommended. My physician also recommended I take them as an aid to weight loss.

How do you know so few people are taking them? And one of our mods doesn't recommend supplements?

Well, I'm going to bust your stats: I take both! 1000mg of L-Carnitine and 400 mcg of chromium picolinate are in my Atkins Basic 3 multi.

p.s. From one of my comments in the recent Read The Book Challenge: "L-carnitine is involved in fat transport which works in collaboration with chromium and CoQ10 to mobilize fat (among other things)."

I added those for awhile and noticed no difference in weight loss, so I stopped spending extra $$ for them, although there is some Chromium Picolinate in my multivitamins. L-Carnitine is too expensive for me unless I can see the benefit.

OTOH, Sherri, one of the moderators, does take L-Carnitine. At least I believe I read a post of hers saying that.

Off topic: mizski, where do you find Atkins vitamins? I thought they weren't in production anymore.

Mizski,

I made my comments based on an admittedly un-exhaustive review of posts on the Vita Nutrients Solution/Supplements Forum, focusing on those where posters list the supplements they are taking.

They're not. I use Vitacost's version and usually take 2 caps/day instead of 3. I get my L-Carnitine and other supplements there after I scope out the local stores for sales.

I was being a bit goofy in my reply. I also have noticed that many do not put much importance on supplements even though Dr. Atkins stresses that controlled carb intake, exercise AND proper supplements are key in doing Atkins successfully.

On a personal note, I was just taking my Centrum Silver, EFAs and a few other supplements when I started Atkins. I felt kind of punky even after Induction so I went back and re-read the section on supplements. Figured, what the heck...maybe Dr. Atkins knows what he's talking about and I'll give his recommendations a try. He was right. The difference in how I felt was HUGE.

I do believe more people should pay attention to Chapter 23 and take the supplements he recommends.

p.s. Chapter 23 is titled Nutritional Supplements: Don't Even Think of Getting Along Without Them! Yet many do.

I take both too, but I have noticed, like the OP, that in those threads about "What vitamins are you taking", they do not seem to get mentioned much.

Default Re: L-Carnitine and Chromium Picolinate

I take chromium, L-carnitine, CoQ10 and CLA daily. At night I take potassium, magnesium and calcium to help with cramping. In addition to these vitamins, I also take milk thisle, N-Acetyl Cysteine, Lecithin to help reduce my blood pressure and help with kidney and liver support. I also take a one-a-day vitamin, too, and just recently started taking my Omega-3 fish oil pills. I read on a bodybuilding website that this helps the joints. I might start doing chondroitin glucosamine again, but I need to find the shell-fish free stuff. I was taking 1000 mg of Niacin, until I found out that I was allergic to the stuff. Whew, that wasn't fun at all. Felt like my skin was on fire.

I don't know if this helps the weight loss or not, however, I do know that I haven't had a cold since. All the while, my wife and some of the cats have came down with a cold and they have been sneezing and coughing. {{{knock on wood}}}
