Special Anniversary Edition!

HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY
ATKINS DIET BULLETIN BOARD!

www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com

One year old on February 23, 2004
And
10,000 Members Strong!

A Message from Tom

Well it has been a year and I am pretty surprised at how the board and our community have grown this past year. I started this board a year ago because of some issues (greed) with the people who were running the bulletin board and archives for the old atkins@cuy.net mailing list (which I started about 10 years ago after losing 100 lbs. on the diet). I thought it would be a nice supplement to the list to start the bulletin board. It was very small at first but was immediately friendly. I realized there was something more than just a board -- it already had characteristics of a family. People immediately wanted to chip in and help out. The board began to grow at an amazing pace. Much faster than thought. There were some server issues and slowness but we worked through them and got a new server. We are constantly improving the board. Through everything we had a very loyal following and those are the people who make up this board.

What we have been trying to promote is friendly support. We want people to feel comfortable talking about issues and getting the support that they need. Christie and I began to select moderators for the board and eventually began to include them in the decision to choose new ones. I think our moderating crew led by Christie, our admin, is the best on the net. Without them the community and the board would be at a great loss and we would probably not be where it is today.

Going forward I foresee the Atkins Diet Bulletin Board being "THE" site on the web for Atkins Diet support. I foresee at least 30,000 members by next anniversary. We are in the process of improving and adding features to the site (Please check back regularly). I would personally like to hear back from each and every one of you to let me know what we can do to improve this site and what we can do to help you in your weight loss and continuation of this way of life.

As a parting statement I would like to thank you, the members, who are the basis for making this board great. I want to thank the mods for their efforts to keep the board on track and in keeping everyone's posts answered. A very special thanks to Christie who was the second member of this board and who has stuck through everything and done a wonderful job.

In answer to a thread, "How has the Atkins Diet Bulletin Board helped you?"

Origam:

1.
Lots of support. It's kind of like having your personal cheerleading squad. Everyone is happy for you even if you lose just a pound. Everyone is also here for you when you slip to help you get back on track again.
2.
Info-- tons of info! The little things that could help you better, like drinking tons of water and the no no's that one wouldn't think are no-no's.
3.
I've stopped drinking sodas because of this board... and it's helped! I also didn't go through withdrawal from caffeine.
4.
Being able to ask questions and getting answers that help.

I was excited when I started this diet, but I've been even more jazzed since finding this board because of all the success.. And it's something you can see with the before and after pictures, it's not just word of mouth! I like the fact that there are people who've been there done that.. And that are still doing it that are helping others. It helps to see the advice offered from someone who has endured the same thing us newbies are going through.

Meow-Mix:

For the first time in my life I feel very educated with the choices I am making to make me a healthier person. I attribute much of this to the information I have learned on this board. Extremely helpful!

Elleth:

1.
The exercise challenge! I learned how to exercise better, and the importance of weightlifting for building muscle. I also found out that it's not just for men! The challenge helps to keep me accountable to do my exercise every week. I sure don't want that slug to appear!
2.
Education. I have learned far beyond what the book teaches by talking with others who live this WOL. I've learned a lot of good things along with learning from other's mistakes so I didn't make them on my own.
3.
Before/After pictures. I find them very inspiring! You can look at numbers all day, but seeing real people losing weight is awesome! And the best part is there is no disclaimer of the weight loss not being typical results. It really is what you can expect on this diet!
4.
Support. Having someone there to answer my questions when I need them has been great! The support here is the heart and soul of this board.
5.
Recipes. I've learned how to bring in food I never thought possible via the recipes here. Chocolate clouds got me through induction.
6.
Graphics. The cheat-free and weight loss graphics on everyone's posts are inspiring. It is great to be able to come in and change mine everyday adding more pounds lost and more days cheat-free.

PERRY:

Came here because I learn best from others. I can't just pick up an educational book (like DANDR) and understand without supporting data. (Just the computer geek in me).

The experiences shared here have been invaluable to me. I wanted to reciprocate in kind which is why I'm over 100 posts right now. Normally, I would just sit back and lurk but you guys have made it so easy for me to contribute.

I also appreciate your 'can do' attitudes.

Marigold:

_Yes! This board has made a tremendous impact on my WOE, especially during this tough Induction phase. It is wonderful to have a place to come for support at any time and receive a variety of responses and help. I especially enjoy having many "experts" here to help with tougher, technical questions. The advice to use FitDay is great! It is helping me track not only what I eat, but also ensuring that I meet my nutritional requirements. Thanks, ADBB!

Nickykzo:

Well I'm new but let me say -

  • Support and information
  • Motivation (before/after pics)
  • "Real talk" - you folks don't support just by saying nice things, you support by giving us real honest straightforward information to help us succeed. I don't need anyone blowing smoke up my . . . LOL I need some common sense straight talk. I've checked out a few boards and that's why this is my favorite

Stinkanimal:

Simply put - this is the best Atkins board I've encountered. Been to a few others but traffic was low and seemed dominated by friends simply chit chatting about stuff other than the WOE.

Lavender:

Everyone on this board has always been supportive and understanding.
Even Now
I haven't been here that long but the amount of time I have been here the support out weighs it.
Wish I could say more but your all so great! There are no more words.
Continued success to all

JANICE:

We all lead busy lives. I know a few people that are "doing Atkins" but we only see each other maybe a couple times a week or talk on the phone occasionally. This board has been a constant friend throughout my weight loss journey. A friend is always there for you and this board has always been here for me --- day or night, rain or shine.

This board filled a void in my life that opened up as I got more serious about reaching my goal and deciding to make this WOE my WOEFL. Support and encouragement and friends are just a "click" away. This board gave me a place to come to for answers when I needed them. It's like Motel 6, the "light is always on" and the "Welcome" sign is always out. With members all over the world there are always people here. Like someone already said, this board is a place I have come to depend on. It's nice to have a place to go where everyone has the same thing in common. It is comfortable being here -- no one has to be ashamed of their weight or what anyone will think of them --- we are all here for each other and we can just be ourselves.

I get a "warm fuzzy" feeling every time I click on this site. It's almost as good as coming home after a hard day at work. I come here every day and relax, take a deep breath, and renew my resolve to reach my goal. It's definitely a "give" and "take" situation which makes for the best relationship. Does it sound like I'm "married" to this site? LOL

I just love this board and all my friends here. I truly do not know if I would have been motivated enough to change my life had it not been for this board. Thank you ADBB!!!

Erin:

I am fairly new (3 weeks OP) and I feel like this board is my saving grace.

SUPPORT - SUPPORT some people who rain on your parade, but for good reason Laura!, but then are there with even MORE SUPPORT!

I don't think I would have succeeded -or at least felt like I wasn't alone- without all the people here!

Kate:

There is no way I could ever explain the way this board has helped me. It, as well as Atkins, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Lilonda Inside:

DITTO To all of the above!!

well..... except for the exercise part.. LOL but I'm working on it, AND inspired!

Michael:

This board is incredible, without fine folks like yourself I would be completely lost. thanks to everyone who listens. Good luck everyone

Happy Valentine's Day!

Remember Food does not equal Love!

Roses are Red

Violets are Blue

Sugar has no nutritional value, is directly harmful to your health, and is a metabolic poison. The average American in 1999 consumed 158 –Pounds of caloric sweetners. This translates into 750 calories per day.

Some of Naja's ideas for a romantic, decadent low carb dinner:

  • Broiled lobster tails with garlic butter, salad of baby spring greens and edible flowers with olive oil and white wine vinegar infused with orange peel, miniature spinach and Gruyere cheese soufflés topped with a spray of tender young asparagus. Learn about soufflés here:

    http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=5887

  • Grilled filet mignon mashed cauliflower fauxtatoes, frisee and arugula salad topped with prosciutto and poached egg.

  • Shrimp scampi appetizer with garlic and parsley butter baked or seared salmon coated with cracked black peppercorns and Ketatoes, rich Caesar salad with "Italian flatbread" croutons.

  • Lobster "chops" and/or large scallops wrapped in bacon and broiled. Green and yellow squash "hearts" cut from zucchini and yellow crookneck squash, sautéed with butter, olive oil and Italian herbs. Individual hearty chicken and low carb root vegetable soups, with grated Gruyere or Parmesan cheese melted on top. Composed salad of thinly sliced varietal radishes dressed with olive oil and good quality vinegar.

  • Grilled rare duck breast, sliced thinly, sprinkled with cracked black pepper and served on a bed of arugula and watercress dressed with the duck drippings. Mashed fauxtatoes in a heart-shaped mold. A wedge of Brie, at room temperature or slightly warm, topped with a few perfect raspberries.

  • Steak tartare appetizer – slice very lean, good quality frozen raw beef very thinly, place between two layers of plastic wrap and pound with a mallet until nearly paper-thin. Lay on a warm plate and top with drizzle of truffle oil shredded Asiago cheese and capers.

  • Oysters on the half-shell are traditionally romantic and aphrodisiac. The carb conscious cook may serve them simply with a twist of lemon or a dash of horseradish sauce.

Dear Gabby

Dear Gabby,

My spouse is getting a bit heavy and I want to tell him or her but don't know how to go about it. I being someone who has suffered from obesity I know the problems that go along with this illness but at the same time know that it is something that my spouse will not enjoy hearing from me. Should I just not mention it even though they have gained a good amount of weight in the past year?

Concerned and care.

Dear Concerned and Care,

You have presented a very good question. As with anything else that is a threat to a loved ones health and well being, your caring and concern is real. But, you have to approach this with kid gloves. First, it is so important that you let your mate know how much you love them and how much you care. I think the first thing you can suggest to your mate is a complete physical. If your mate is truly overweight then I am sure his or her doctor will suggest a weight loss program. Which is advisable for anyone starting a weight loss program. Once the seed is planted you can water it and make it grow! If you are the homemaker then it is up to you to make the proper choices as far as shopping and meals are concerned. But remember denial is not just a river in Egypt. Your request may fall on deaf ears. That being the case you have another choice. You set the pace and you are the example. Suggest walks, suggest that you are watching what you eat and maybe he/she will follow. The last thing you want to do here is to nag, bicker or make your mate feel inferior or guilty for his or her weight. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make them drink. I wish you much luck.

Dear Gabby,

Well, here it is another Valentine's Day and here I am alone again, or should I say still. Several of the girls at work got flowers and candy from their sweeties. I got a new stapler from supplies. I am so sad and feeling so depressed. I live alone, I eat alone, I watch TV alone and I am point blank alone. I have meet several guys over the years and none have been the one for me, some have problems with my being overweight, others just call again, the last one was a selfish jerk who I am sure just used me for my car and apartment. I often wonder if maybe I should have kept the last one, better then nothing. I hate Valentine's Day!

Alone

Dear Alone,

First of all we need to get your attitude adjusted. You sound like a wonderful person who is just having a bad "valentine's day". It is only one day of the year and seeing your are on the Atkins Diet; focus on how great Valentine's will be next year. Take these negative feelings and turn them into motivation and goals. Turn these feelings into positives. You can do it, but only you can. Make a list of all the good things about yourself. Make another list of the things you are not pleased with about yourself, only when you list them; they have to be written as a positive. You have to have a plan on how to change them, say for instance you do not like your hair, then make an appointment to get it shaped, styled, colored or whatever it takes. If you are shy, then challenge yourself to introduce yourself, or say "hello" to 5 new people everyday. Focus on the improvements you are going to make. In the wise words of a fellow Atkineer, Life is about progression not perfection. Now, turn off the TV, join a gym, a health club, and a church group and become a part of things. Make your self available, no more hiding. Get out there and grab life, live it to it's fullest. Never settle for less then you deserve or want.

Hi,

I have been a member here for a while, but I have only participated as a lurker.

My name is Tina, I am a SAHM and I home school my two little ones. I have been on Atkins since June and met my goal on Halloween. Sure feels good.

Here are some stats:
Start Weight - 160
Goal Weight - 125
Present Weight - 122
Start Clothing Size - 14 (probably should have been a 16, but there is no way that I was going to buy a size that big)
Present Clothing Size - 6

This is the first time in my life that I have been overweight. With the pregnancy of my last child (7 yo daughter) I put on quite a few pounds. It was a high-risk pregnancy and I was bed ridden. After she was born, I did not do anything to get the weight off. A few years later, I decided to quit smoking and that helped pack on even more pounds. I had wanted to lose the extra weight, but never really did anything about it until last summer. Diabetes runs heavily on both sides of my family and I wanted to get rid of the extra weight. Besides, I was sooooooo tired of hiding my extra poundage by wearing baggy clothing and just plain ole tired of being very uncomfortable.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

Tina

TOMMY

Start Date: August 18, 2003
Goal Reached: December 23, 2003
Start Weight: 220
Goal Weight: 155

Goal Reached - 65 lbs. lost

Ok I wrote this long pompous 5-page success story and was ready to post it but decided not to. Instead I'll limit it to a few thoughts on the diet and future goals.

The diet is great. I found this website 2 months into my diet and wish I found it earlier. I corrected and adjusted so much in my diet just from all that I have learned here on this site. So all my compliments go out to the members here as much as the Atkins diet itself.

My Diet:

(Modified OWL) Okay I rushed it a little bit and never got further then induction and some nuts, remaining at less the 20 carbs per day. And yes I counted calories and kept them pretty low. Even though I was supposed to start cycling through the other phases earlier I still intend on doing so now. If I lose more weight doing so, I won't complain too much

I could be completely wrong about this but according to my calculations, out of the 65 lbs. I lost about 7 lbs. of it came from muscle. I have no clue if that is good or bad but from the little bit I researched so far puts it at a good ratio. Anyway I started to take whey protein to help. It did help but eventually slowed and stalled the weight loss. Being so close to my goal at the time I decided to discontinue using it until I reached my goal.

Ok I'm now at my goal weight and I went from 32% to 13% body fat. I would still like to get the body fat percentage in between 10-12%. So I want to lose a little more fat and at the same time increase in lean body mass.

I think this will fall right into place in the future with the added protein supplements plus moving up the Atkins phases.

Smolinski
