  • New to the board!

I am new to this BB and did a search for an Atkins board, because I need a place to be! I just started induction last Friday and have already lost 4 pounds in 3 days, and am rather excited about that! I did Atkins some 10 years ago, had a bit of success, but then somehow ran off the tracks and never got back on board! Now, all these years later, I have recently learned that I am a type 2 diabetic, and I have been seeing my doctor and taking meds, all to no avail. I have been switched to 4 different meds trying to find one I can live with, as they have all made me very ill, more so than the disease itself! Being very sick, and desperate, last week, it occurred to me to dust off the ole Atkins and other low carb books that I had stashed on my bookshelves and give them a reread. It was interesting to me to note that I had forgotten a lot of the details of this WOE and that I had previously skipped all that "nonsense" materials dealing with diabetes! OH, how I have changed my tune! I made a decision to quit all my meds for now and just try to do this alone, without the help of the death dealing drugs! I am feeling so much better, and my sugar, while still not normal, is more stable after just 3 days of induction, and is, I believe slowly, slowly creeping downward. My blood pressure has also returned to normal, as it was creeping into dangerous territory when I started taking drugs. I will see my doctor again in about a month, and I will tell her all at that time. But for now, I am going to quietly rebel and do things Dr. Atkins way, and take my carbs down as low as I can stand and see if my sugars don't come down. I did have a shock tonight, tho! With my dinner, I had some zuchinni and my sugar shot up 50 points! YIKES! I have seen that I can do greens and broccoli without a blip, but I have to be very careful of other veggies. Bummer, cuz I am really such a veggie lover. But, I will forego them if it means my health will straighten out and I can perhaps avoid an early ugly death from the complications of diabetes!

Thanks for listening! It is good to find a place of support!

      Hi and welcome back –

Don’t compare what you lost or how you did “the last time” your body and lifestyle isn’t the same as last time – follow the plan the way it is written, exercise, drink plenty of pure water (64 ounces minimum daily – nothing added) and you’ll be on your way to loosing before you know it. We follow the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) edition - I hope that is the one you have. If not check online for one - I got mine, with shipping, for under $5.00.

I was diagnosed Type 2 last year - January 5, 2009 I started Atkins and have lost 35 pounds since. My first A1C was 10.3 -- the one I had a month & a half ago was 5.0. Unlike you I am on medication because I have other problems other than diabetes but am hoping to be able to either reduce the amount or get off the meds completely the next time I see my endocrinologist. Make sure if you start having any unusual problems you get to your doctor immediately.

Drink a minimum 64 ounces of water daily, exercise starting today, take a good multi-vitamin and eat the foods only on the acceptable food list. I don't have any trouble eating zucchini (with my blood sugars) - how did you cook it?

Check the STAC Second Time Around Club - Atkins Diet for additional support. Check the stickies at the top of the induction forum to refresh your memory on the plan. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/5781-before-you-begin-atkins-nutritional-approach.html.

The recipe sites are a helpful meal planning tool – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

You should be able to eat zucchini just watch your portion sizes and how it is cooked. My MIL is a type 2 and she has no problems with it. She always eats here veggies with protein and monitors her portion sizes.

Thank you one and all for your kind reception! And your good advice! As far as the zuchini goes, it was pan fried, with a bit of oil. and I ate a large hamburger steak to go with it. I was just so surprised! Because I am off my meds, I think I need to really cool it with the carbs, even veggie carbs. Had a salad for my lunch today, lots of good greens, and a small bit of onion and red bell pepper and a few grape tomatoes, but still seemed to go up too high. In one of the books, actually the cookbook by Dr. Atkin's wife, he wrote a forward and there was one paragraph that was very compelling to me. He remarked that if one brought their carbs down as close to zero as possible, in 48 hours you will have brought your Blood sugar down into normal range! I want to do that, but oh is that so hard! I am also currently trying to slog thru Gary Taubs book, Good Calories, Bad Calories and that comes out in favor of a very, very low carb diet for good health lived in leanness! Hard to read, but still compelling!

Just want to also add, that I DO have the DANDR book of 2002 and it is what I am currently going over to refresh my memory. If I have one downfall so far, it is my water consumption. Normally, it is pretty good, but in the last week, I have sloughed off in that department, so thank you, Carol, for your good reminders in that department!

I have also been trying to sort out my way around the board and finally found my control panel! If it was a snake, it woulda bit me, as my Granny used to say! LOL! Anyway, I have been dinking around with that, but what I can't still figure out, is how one goes about getting one of those ticker thingys to show up???!!! Help!!!

Unless you are eating the recommended amount of carbs daily I don't know how you are going to follow the plan.....it might be worth it to take your meds until you get a few pounds off then go see your doctor and see if he thinks you should be going off them.

I eat all the foods you listed above and have no problems with blood sugar spikes. I've been eating this way for 8 months, so if it was going to happen it should have happened by now.

Follow the plan the way it is written in the 2002 DANDR book and see what happens. Your body may just be getting use to eating this way and needs time to adjust.

              Re: New to the board!

I really am trying to eat according to the plan! I am counting my carbs and trying very hard to stay under 20 per day, although I am not always successful in doing so, for I am counting all the grams in eggs and cheese, etc, so that I do not miss anything. I was hopeful that if I went as near to zero as possible, that my BS would drop into normal range, but I have not been able to have a zero carb day so far. I am still eating broccoli and salads, etc. I think the veggies are important to help with regularity, for one thing, and for vitamins for another. So far as the weight loss is concerned, I am doing GREAT! No complaints in that department, as I have lost yet another pound today! That has me really happy. My fasting sugar this morning was at 215, which is high, but is lower for ME lately. It may take a while for the sugar to drop and normalize, I understand that. What is amazing to me is how I am FEELING! I feel so much better today! I am not so tired, and best of all, I am not in the miserable pain that the meds were causing me, which is cause for celebration! My whole digestive system was under enormous stress while taking the drugs, and when I got off them, the symptoms all went away. When I see my doctor again, I will inform her of what has happened. I am keeping notes so that I can remember it all. Next time I see her, I will be taking the second blood panel, and it will be interesting to see how it compares after doing Atkins for a while! I am hoping against hope that I can stay off the meds, but I will see what she wants to do after we see what is going on overall with me.

Thanks, Carol, for your encouragement and input!
