  • Question about Splenda

I see so many people on here talking about how Splenda is not good to use. I'm just curious to why. What is wrong with it? What other sweetners are ok to use? The only thing I put it in is my coffee.(with a tad bit of no carb half and half)

    Re: Question about Splenda

Splenda is the recomended artificial sweetener for Atkins, but alot of people dont like to use it becuase it is a chemical, as are most sweeteners, and also some have bad reactions to it. There is one called stevia that is all natural and comes from an herb. You would have to try it out to see if you like it, it's a different kind of sweet/taste than you would get from a regular sweetener but many (including myself) like it.

You're best to just do some reasearch on splenda (try googling it) and decided for yourself.

I personally do use artificial sweeteners along with the stevia..in moderation.

      Re: Question about Splenda

Aside from splenda being a chemical, they put sugar in those packets as a filler and each packet is about 4 calories and 1 carb so while I was using it I could not loose becasue I did not realize they were Lying on the nutritional info label and I was counting it as zero calories and zero carbs and was using at least 20 packs a day. (that was before I got the book and did internet searches found out the truth)

        Re: Question about Splenda

I use splenda and like it. Have no issues with it being a chemical. I also use stevia occasionally... though the taste takes some getting used to. If you combine the two, in baking for instance, you get better results.

Thanks everyone. I love Splenda. I don't use much at all. Like I said before, just a little in my coffee...

            Re: Question about Splenda

I am use splenda a lot. I have no problems with it and I have gained the taste for it now. Plus a decafe coffee with cream and splenda when I get a craving for something sweet really hits the spot.

Plus if you can find this no-sugar flavored syrup called Torani then wow this really helps out too. I love the chocolate, vanilla, raspberry, and the hazelnut flavors. I put a dash of raspberry in my iced green tea in the afternoon and boy does that satisfy my sweet tooth.

Btw, Torani has Sucralose in it which is a Splenda brand sweetener and I normally find this near the coffee section of most markets out here in California. I hope you find it other places because it is good.

              Re: Question about Splenda

I use splenda, it is my preferred sweetener. The thing is people react differently to different foods/products. That's why I like Atkins so much because it helps you find what YOUR own body reacts to or stalls you out. Aside from it being a chemical, some people have reactions to it such as headaches or they stop loosing weight/ketosis loss. Some don't like to use any sweeteners as it gives into the cravings of sweets.
On another note, I believe that walmart carries their own brand of "splenda" that is supposed to be easier on the pocket book? Sorry I cannot supply the name as I have never tried it myself.

                  Re: Question about Splenda

To see if alternatives are the equivalent of 'Splenda' you need to look for 'sucralose', of which splenda is one brand.

Has anyone tried Altern? Does it taste just like Splenda?

                      Re: Question about Splenda

Liquid "Splenda" is doesn't have the maltodextrin filler that the granular (packet) Splenda has. It's spendy, but fewer carbs when using it for cooking.

Oh and Torani syrup rocks!! I used caramel in a creamy dessert from Linda's site last nite and it was a thing of beaty! mmmmm.

I don't understand why splenda packets have carbs, but whe you buy a product like Davinci's syrups sweetened with splenda, there are no carbs. Can any one explain this?

Splenda is the brand name of Sucralose, an artificial sweetener.

Sucralose itself has no carbs or calories. When in liquid form (as in the Davinci, Torani syrups or one of the liquid Splenda products) it still has no carbs because it's just sucralose and water and flavoring.

To make the granular form of Splenda they use Maltodextrin, which does have carbs. So it's not the sucralose itself that has carbs in this case, it's the filler they use to make it granular. That's where the countable carbs come it.

I think the sweetness of splenda is supposed to be the same as that of sugar, so one cup would equal 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons.
